The COMET contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion MultiPurpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Safety Engineer supports Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) operations for the Consolidated Operations, Management, Engineering, and Test (COMET) Contract at Kennedy Space Center, providing integrated safety, health, and environmental oversight across programs, facilities, ground support equipment, and hazardous operations. This role ensures compliance with federal, NASA, and Space Operations Directorate (SOD) requirements, including OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and ANSI standards, and supports environmental programs such as air permitting, hazardous waste, industrial wastewater, spill prevention (SPCC), and chemical management . Responsibilities include conducting field surveillance, performing behavior-based safety observations and environmental inspections, and executing safety and environmental requirements in the field to support safe and compliant operations. The position also supports work authorization reviews, incident investigations, and corrective action development, while assisting with implementation of safety and environmental programs, regulatory reporting, and compliance tracking. The engineer collaborates with operations, engineering, and environmental stakeholders to resolve issues, develop hazard controls, and improve processes, while utilizing systems such as SETS, Maximo, and CIPS to manage data and performance metrics . Duties are performed under appropriate supervision based on experience level, with increasing responsibility for independent execution, technical leadership, and mentoring, while maintaining required certifications and completing on-the-job training. Qualifications Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering or technical equivalent from an accredited institution. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised. Will be required to wear hearing protection, eye protection, and other associated personal protective equipment. Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing. Working at heights and in confined spaces may be required.
Physical Requirements Physical requirements are:
sitting, walking, standing, use of stairs, and may access remote structures. All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and company safety standards. Attendance Full-time work hours. Position may require occasional overtime, including weekend work, depending on task. Must be able to accurately communicate ideas in writing and verbal communication. Government security clearance may be required in the future. Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relations with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.
