• 4/24/2026 The Department of Environmental Quality is looking for an Environmental Engineer III to assist in the Hazardous Waste Section within the Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control.

This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series. Applicants that qualify under the Return Utah program are welcome to apply. The Return Utah program is a formal career reentry program, designated for Utahns reentering the workforce after a career break. The program is tied to the state job you are applying for meaning that along with a new role and traditional on-the-job training, candidates hired will receive 16 weeks of transitional support (which includes an office technology review, coaching, career development opportunities, mentorship, networking opportunities and job market readiness training). To be eligible for Return Utah, candidates must: Have prior professional/life experience and/or qualifying skills suitable for the job's functional area of interest and, A career break of one year or more at the time of application or, Confirm military affiliation (as a service member, veteran, spouse or partner) or, Be underemployed at the time of application (e.g., limited opportunity, low pay, or unable to utilize full professional skills). This a long-term position meaning employment will extend past the completion of the Return Utah program, provided for 16 weeks. Career Service requirements including the state of Utah's standard probationary period apply. Key Responsibilities Technical review of engineering processes. Prepare technical reports. Inspection and enforcement of hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities. Effectively listen to and communicate with a variety of audiences. Work well independently and in a team environment.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

Communicates regulations and complicated concepts in a waythat is understandable depending on the audience. Listens to understand and responds well to feedback. Skilled in working independently and as a team to worktoward appropriate solutions. Ability to prepare detailed, technical inspection reportsthat enable legally defensible enforcement actions. Knowledge of or ability to learn complicated industrialprocesses. Works collaboratively with colleagues and welcomesknowledge and information sharing.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor degree or higher in an Engineeringfield, preferably Chemical Engineering. Job Series The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Engineer I with a salary range of $25.96

• $41.19 per hour, an Environmental Engineer II with a salary range of $30.57
• $48.48 per hour, or an Environmental Scientist III with a salary range of $34.06
