Job Description

Fire Protection DesignerPosition Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented Fire Protection Designer to develop fire sprinkler and life-safety system designs for commercial, industrial, and residential projects. The Designer will prepare construction drawings, perform hydraulic calculations, select equipment, and ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards. This role requires strong technical drawing skills, familiarity with fire protection design software, and the ability to coordinate with engineers, contractors, and clients to deliver buildable solutions that protect life and property.

Key ResponsibilitiesProduce accurate fire protection and sprinkler system construction drawings, details, and specifications using AutoCAD and other design software.

Perform hydraulic calculations, pipe sizing, and system layout for wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge systems to meet project requirements and code criteria.

Develop and model designs using AutoSPRINK and HydraTec (or equivalent) to validate system performance and optimize layouts.

Ensure compliance with NFPA standards, local building codes, and client requirements; incorporate code research into design decisions.

Coordinate designs with project engineers, architects, MEP disciplines, contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction to resolve conflicts and integrate systems.

Prepare material takeoffs, equipment schedules, and cost-effective design recommendations; support procurement with clear documentation.

Participate in site visits and construction support as needed, including reviewing shop drawings and responding to Requests for Information (RFIs).Maintain organized project files, drawing revisions, and version control; meet project schedules and quality standards.

Provide mentorship to junior designers and collaborate in multidisciplinary project teams to achieve project goals.

QualificationsAssociate degree or certificate in Fire Protection Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field; Bachelors degree preferred.3+ years of experience in fire protection/sprinkler system design or equivalent engineering office experience.

Proficiency with AutoSPRINK and HydraTec preferred; strong working knowledge of AutoCAD for 2D drafting and DWG production.

NICET certification (preferred NICET Level II or higher) or working toward certification.

Solid understanding of NFPA standards (including NFPA 13), building and fire codes, hydraulic calculation methods, and sprinkler system types (wet, dry, pre-action, deluge).Strong technical drafting skills, attention to detail, and the ability to produce clear, constructible drawings.

Excellent communication and coordination skills to work with engineers, architects, contractors, and clients.

Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing project requirements.

Familiarity with BIM workflows and design coordination is a plus.

Must have the mindset of a Fire Protection Designer focused on safety, practicality, and code-compliant solutions.
