Job Description

What You Will Do As a Project Engineer 3 within Plutonium Facilities Engineering (PFE-DO), you will lead the technical execution of complex projects supporting one of the nation's most critical nuclear facilities. You will work directly with facility stakeholders to define technical challenges and develop engineering solutions that improve system performance, reliability, and safety in a high consequence environment. In this role, you will own the full lifecycle of projects, from initial problem definition and scope development through design, implementation, and closeout. You will lead multidisciplinary engineering teams, guide design development and reviews, and ensure technical solutions are effectively implemented in the field. You will also be responsible for managing technical risks, resolving complex issues during execution, and ensuring all deliverables meet quality and regulatory requirements. Your work will directly support national security missions, including nuclear weapons stewardship and modernization, requiring strong technical leadership, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to operate independently in a highly regulated environment. #shiftwork
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience leading technical aspects of engineering projects, including managing multidisciplinary teams and coordinating across engineering disciplines Advanced understanding of engineering design processes, including scope development, engineering documentation, and design review cycles Proven ability to lead design reviews, make technical decisions, and drive project execution in complex environment Ability to independently resolve technical issues, manage change control, and provide engineering direction during implementation Strong communication skills to interface with stakeholders, contractors, and internal teams
Education/Experience:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly

Knowledge of codes and standards commonly used in Department of Energy or Department of Defense environments such as
ASME, NQA
1, IBC, IEEE, or NFPA Experience with project scheduling and cost tracking tools such as P6, MS Project, or earned value management systems Familiarity with federal contracting or procurement processes, particularly for engineering services Experience mentoring or developing junior engineers Prior experience supporting Department of Energy or Department of Defense programs Ability to obtain required project engineering qualifications and subcontract technical representative qualifications within required timeframes Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): General Physical Mobility, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific Physical Mobility use of both hands, use of both arms, use of both legs, use of both feet, carry/lift up to 20 pounds.
Work Schedule:
This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Work Environment:
Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.
Work Location:
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance:
Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements• for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
Eligibility requirements:
To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test:
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
