Senior BIM Specialist Job Description We are seeking a Senior BIM Specialist who will translate design intent, contract documents, and 3D design models of piping and mechanical systems into detailed fabrication and installation Building Information Models (BIM). In this role, you lead project-level BIM/VDC efforts, oversee a team of specialists, and ensure that all models and drawings meet high standards for accuracy, constructability, and coordination. You collaborate closely with engineers, contractors, and field personnel to deliver fully coordinated LOD 400 mechanical and plumbing models and associated shop drawings. Responsibilities Lead and support a group of skilled VDC Specialists at the project level to ensure project deadlines and requirements are consistently met. Support project teams within the VDC group at a project level, providing guidance on BIM standards, workflows, and deliverables. Manage construction documents, ensuring that all BIM team members have the most current project information, including submittals, specifications, and vendor-specific models. Work with engineers and project leadership to produce
LOD 400 BIM
models for mechanical and plumbing systems suitable for fabrication and installation. Collaborate with the general contractor and other subcontractors to achieve spatial coordination of all trades within the project. Attend weekly coordination meetings, either onsite or virtually, to resolve clashes, review progress, and maintain alignment with all project stakeholders. Generate and document Requests for Information (RFIs) for submission to the design team when clarifications or additional information are required. Create detailed shop drawings for fabrication and installation of mechanical, piping, and plumbing systems in accordance with project standards and codes. Develop, annotate, and maintain shop drawings, hanger drawings, and sleeve drawings to support accurate field installation. Create and export hanger and sleeve coordinates for use by the robotic total station layout team for precise field layout. Communicate with field personnel as needed to ensure fabrication and installation intent is clearly represented in shop and spool drawings. Mentor and train VDC team members in the effective use of modeling and collaboration software and in the creation of fabrication and installation drawings and documents. Work collaboratively with other team members to complete drawings and models as required to meet project schedules and milestones. Maintain training and continued education for yourself and the team to continually improve accuracy, productivity, and use of BIM tools. Provide input to management regarding hardware and software requirements necessary to perform BIM and VDC duties effectively. Enhance communication between functional business partners and project stakeholders to support smooth project execution. Participate in job interviews when requested to speak to the capabilities and workflows of the VDC team. Coordinate project activities, monitor progress, and adjust priorities to successfully reach project goals and deliverables. Prepare and deliver presentations or participate in public speaking engagements related to project coordination or BIM/VDC processes when needed. Essential Skills 5 or more years of experience with installation of mechanical or plumbing systems. Proficiency in Autodesk Revit, including Revit MEP and Revit Architecture, for mechanical, piping, and plumbing modeling. Proficiency in AutoCAD for drafting and detailing mechanical, piping, and plumbing systems. Proficiency in Autodesk Fabrication CADmep for fabrication-level modeling and detailing. Proficiency in Autodesk Navisworks for BIM coordination, clash detection, and model review. Experience with BIM coordination, BIM detailing, and piping coordination for mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. Strong understanding of mechanical drafting and design, including HVAC drafting, piping design, and plumbing design. Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret project schedules (Gantt charts), technical literature, and construction plans. Ability to define problems, assess options, and make appropriate recommendations in a construction and BIM context. Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to train, mentor, and lead team members. Strong leadership skills to lead a project team within the group and meet project requirements. Good analytical skills and the ability to generate creative and practical solutions to coordination and design issues. Ability to perform well and meet expectations in a fast-paced environment with multiple concurrent priorities. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to cooperatively work with others across disciplines and functions. Strong self-management and organizational skills to manage time, tasks, and project deliverables effectively. Ability and willingness to demonstrate ethical behavior and a high level of integrity in all work activities. Ability to balance team and individual responsibilities and manage stress and job demands effectively. Competence in public speaking and presentations related to project coordination or BIM deliverables. Ability to distinguish between shades of color for accurate interpretation of drawings and models. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, and ability to learn company-specific applications and software. Additional Skills & Qualifications Proficiency in other BIM software beyond Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Fabrication CADmep, and Navisworks is a plus. Experience working with mechanical contractors or in HVAC construction environments. Familiarity with construction document management, modeling, drafting, and design workflows. Experience with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) coordination and construction management processes. Knowledge of P&IDs and their application to mechanical and piping systems modeling. Experience using Autodesk and CAD-based tools for drawing, piping, and mechanical design in a construction setting. Self-driven desire to learn, become more competent, and succeed in the BIM/VDC field. Professional demeanor with the ability to represent the BIM/VDC team effectively in internal and external interactions. Strong team philosophy and commitment to enhancing communication between functional business partners. Willingness to maintain ongoing training and continued education to stay current with evolving BIM technologies and best practices. Work Environment This role is 100% remote, with collaboration primarily conducted on East Coast or Midwest time zones. You work closely with a distributed project team using Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Fabrication CADmep, Navisworks, and other BIM and collaboration tools, as well as Microsoft Office applications. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Raleigh, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $50.00/hr.
