Job Title:
Senior Hardware Design Engineer Job Description This position leads multiple hardware and PCB design projects from concept through production, with a strong focus on new product development, design improvements, and cost reductions. The role engages in all phases of electrical subsystem design for printed circuit boards and sensor-based products, including concept creation, detailed design, documentation, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing support. The engineer will develop innovative, manufacturable designs that meet stringent safety, performance, reliability, and cost targets while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams. Responsibilities Lead and own multiple engineering projects, including new product developments, design improvements, and cost reduction initiatives. Engage in all phases of electrical subsystem design for PCBs and sensor products, from initial concept and architecture through detailed design, documentation, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing release. Design, build, and test hardware prototypes to validate performance against defined technical and regulatory requirements. Plan and manage project requirements, including defining scope, identifying technical risks, and establishing deliverables, timelines, and milestones. Develop innovative circuit and hardware designs that meet safety, performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost objectives. Create and maintain detailed design documentation, including schematics, PCB layouts, bills of materials, and supporting engineering records. Write clear and thorough test instructions, engineering reports, and engineering change notices to support product development and lifecycle management. Troubleshoot and resolve hardware issues, including performance deviations, reliability concerns, and manufacturability challenges. Provide technical assistance and guidance to purchasing, service, sales, marketing, and production teams to support sourcing, customer needs, product launches, and ongoing manufacturing. Collaborate with other hardware design engineers and the broader engineering team to share best practices, review designs, and ensure consistency across projects. Essential Skills Minimum of 8 years of experience in PCB and hardware design. Proficiency with Altium or a similar PCB design package for schematic capture and PCB layout. Strong hands-on experience in hardware design, including circuit design, PCB layout, and prototype bring-up and testing. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, including requirements, risks, deliverables, and timelines. Experience writing technical documentation such as test instructions, engineering reports, and engineering change notices. Strong troubleshooting skills for hardware issues, including design validation and verification. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is strongly desired. Experience with lamp ballast design, development, and troubleshooting. Knowledge of UV fluorescent and xenon arc lamp technologies. Background in designing power devices and controllers, including high-voltage switch-mode power supplies. Experience designing electronics using high-voltage MOSFETs and IGBTs. Expertise in designing and specifying custom inductors and transformers. Experience troubleshooting voltage transients, EMI, and susceptibility-related problems. Familiarity working with 3-phase equipment up to 400V. Understanding of EMI mitigation techniques and power electronics best practices. Work Environment This role is primarily based onsite, with the expectation of working 100% on location and some limited remote flexibility when appropriate. The engineer will work within a collaborative engineering group of approximately 20-25 engineers, including two other hardware design engineers and an engineering leader. The environment is hands-on and project-driven, with access to the tools and equipment needed for PCB and hardware design, prototyping, and testing. The team structure supports close collaboration, technical mentoring, and cross-functional interaction with purchasing, service, sales, marketing, and production. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Westlake, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $48.08 - $60.10/hr.
