Job Description
Plumbing/Fire Protection EngineerPosition Overview We are seeking a Plumbing/Fire Protection Engineer to design, model, and deliver plumbing and fire protection systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial projects. The ideal candidate will develop code-compliant designs, perform hydraulic calculations and load analyses, produce construction documents, and coordinate with architects, MEP disciplines, contractors and authorities having jurisdiction. A strong background in Revit/BIM workflows and practical field knowledge of system installation, testing and commissioning is highly desirable.
Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop plumbing and fire protection system designs for new construction and renovation projects, including indoor and outdoor piping, sanitary, storm drainage, domestic water, medical gas, fire sprinkler, standpipe and special hazard systems.
Perform hydraulic calculations, load analyses and pipe sizing for fire protection systems; size pumps, tanks and related equipment.
Produce construction documents, specifications, details and equipment schedules using Revit (BIM) and AutoCAD; maintain model and drawing coordination with other disciplines.
Coordinate MEP and architectural interfaces, perform clash detection in Navisworks or Revit and resolve design conflicts during design and construction phases.
Prepare basis of design documents, technical specifications, cost estimates, design calculations and permit submittals; ensure compliance with NFPA, IBC, local codes and owner requirements.
Support construction through submittal reviews, RFI responses, shop drawing review, site visits and field observation; assist with testing, commissioning and system acceptance.
Provide QA/QC on drawings and calculations, mentor junior engineers and drafters, and contribute to project planning, scheduling and coordination meetings.
Participate in client meetings, coordinate with authorities having jurisdiction and provide professional support during inspections and permitting processes.
QualificationsBachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering or related discipline; Masters degree is a plus.
Professional Engineer (PE) license or NICET certification in fire protection is preferred.
Minimum 37 years of relevant experience designing plumbing and fire protection systems for building projects; experience across commercial, healthcare, education or industrial sectors is a plus.
Proficiency with Revit (Revit MEP and BIM workflows) and AutoCAD; experience with Navisworks, BIM 360 or similar coordination tools preferred.
Experience with hydraulic calculation software (e.g., HydraCALC, HASS, Elite, Victaulic, SprinkCAD) and pump/tank sizing.
Strong knowledge of NFPA standards (especially
Ability to produce clear construction documents, specifications and design calculations; attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, clients and contractors.
Willingness to perform occasional site visits; valid drivers license required.
Project management experience, client-facing skills and experience mentoring junior staff are a plus.
