Job Title:
Engineer, R D PackagingJob Description This role serves as an individual contributor on sustaining packaging teams, focusing on the design and development of packaging components, artwork, labels, and related verification activities for sterile and non-sterile medical devices. The Engineer, R D Packaging supports the full product lifecycle from early concept through commercialization, ensuring best-in-class packaging and labeling solutions that enhance customer experience, meet global regulatory requirements, and maintain high quality standards in a highly regulated environment. Responsibilities + Design and develop packaging components, artwork, and labeling for sterile and non-sterile medical devices from concept through commercialization. + Sustain and enhance best-in-class packaging and labeling solutions across an existing portfolio of products. + Plan and execute design verification activities, including packaging testing and shelf-life testing, to ensure performance and compliance. + Develop and refine label designs, including Instructions for Use (IFUs), in alignment with regulatory and customer requirements. + Collaborate with drafters to create accurate 3D models and artwork that support packaging and labeling designs. + Drive continuous improvement by assessing current procedures, incorporating Voice of the Customer feedback, and identifying best practices in packaging and labeling. + Demonstrate strong understanding of the product development life cycle by delivering high-quality, timely documentation and technical deliverables. + Work closely and cooperatively with cross-functional partners in quality, manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, marketing, R D device design, supply chain, vendors, and kitting centers across multiple geographies. + Embed quality principles into all aspects of product development and sustaining work, ensuring compliance with all applicable quality requirements. + Lead and support initiatives that simplify and improve compliance with complex and evolving global regulatory requirements for packaging and labeling. + Support internal and external audits related to packaging and labeling, and assist in addressing non-conformances and Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPAs). + Lead small-scale packaging and labeling projects, or co-manage larger programs that drive changes and improvements across the product portfolio. + Mentor or supervise technical staff as needed, providing guidance on packaging and labeling best practices and processes. + Demonstrate a high level of service and accountability in managing a varied workload, often under tight timelines, for multiple internal stakeholders. + Apply project management skills to ensure assigned packaging and labeling activities are completed on time and within budget. Essential Skills + Bachelor's degree in Packaging, Industrial, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field. + 0-2 years of experience working in a highly regulated industry. + Experience or training in packaging engineering, including packaging design and development. + Ability to perform and document design verification and shelf-life testing for packaging. + Functional knowledge of design controls as applied to packaging development in regulated environments. + Familiarity with industry standards for packaging design and testing, such as ASTM and ISTA. + Knowledge of database-driven labeling systems and processes for label and IFU development. + Experience with or exposure to statistical analysis, including interpretation and communication of test results. + Strong technical aptitude with the ability to understand complex packaging and labeling requirements. + Effective project management capabilities to support timely and cost-effective delivery of packaging projects. + Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams. + Demonstrated ability to work under tight timelines while maintaining high quality and attention to detail. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience in medical device, biotechnology, or pharmaceutical packaging design and development. + Demonstrated experience resolving design and process-related packaging issues on commercial products. + Hands-on experience applying ASTM and ISTA packaging test methods in a product development or sustaining environment. + Practical experience using database-driven labeling systems to manage labels and IFUs. + Experience supporting audits, addressing non-conformances, and contributing to CAPA activities related to packaging and labeling. + Prior experience mentoring or supervising technical staff in an engineering or packaging function. + Exposure to global regulatory requirements for medical device packaging and labeling. + Proven ability to incorporate Voice of the Customer feedback into packaging and labeling solutions. + Strong problem-solving skills with a continuous improvement mindset. Work Environment The Engineer, R D Packaging works in a structured, highly regulated environment focused on medical device packaging and labeling. The role involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams including quality, manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, marketing, R D, supply chain, external vendors, and kitting centers across different regions. Work typically takes place in an office and laboratory or test setting, using tools and systems related to packaging design, 3D modeling, artwork development, database-driven labeling systems, and packaging test equipment aligned with ASTM and ISTA standards. The position requires managing multiple projects simultaneously, working to tight timelines, and adhering to formal design control and quality system procedures. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Fremont, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $69.00 - $69.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
