Packaging Engineer Location:
Michigan City, IN Required Skills 5+ years of experience in Packaging Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering for industrial products and components Proficient in NX (Unigraphics)/Pro-E (Creo) CAD software Proficient in MS Office Suite and general computer applications Experience with packaging design, material handling systems, and manufacturing environments Strong knowledge of packaging materials, transportation requirements, and warehouse operations Job Responsibilities Develop and standardize packaging specifications and engineering standards for raw materials, WIP, service parts, finished goods, and export shipments. Design and optimize packaging solutions including: Returnable containers Pallets Dunnage Corrugated packaging Gaylords Totes and bins Foam packaging systems Recommend appropriate packaging materials, container types, pallet configurations, and shipping methods based on product, transportation, and storage requirements. Lead packaging design, prototyping, testing, validation, and implementation activities. Design material handling equipment such as carts, trolleys, flow racks, transport fixtures, and ergonomic line-side delivery systems. Support packaging standards for product protection, warehouse optimization, inventory accuracy, material flow, and export compliance. Collaborate with packaging operations and suppliers to resolve packaging issues and improve packaging quality and efficiency. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce product damage, packaging waste, and material scrap. Participate in packaging validation, risk assessments, cost-reduction initiatives, and process improvement projects. Ensure compliance with GMP practices, ISO standards, transportation regulations, and safety requirements. Coordinate with operations, quality, supply chain, suppliers, and manufacturing engineering teams. Support new product introduction (NPI) and packaging development projects. Develop sustainable and returnable packaging solutions to improve operational and transportation efficiency. Utilize NX and AutoCAD for packaging design, documentation, and engineering implementation. Preferred Background Industrial equipment, manufacturing, heavy machinery, compressors, automotive, or related industries. Experience with returnable packaging programs and warehouse material flow optimization. Knowledge of packaging validation, export packaging requirements, and lean manufacturing principles.
