Job Title:
Supplier Quality Engineer Job Description The Supplier Quality Engineer ensures that incoming materials and components for metal fabrication and assembly meet rigorous quality standards. This role leads supplier quality performance for new product development and ongoing production, drives continuous improvement with domestic and international suppliers, and implements robust process controls and quality assurance plans that support a strong commitment to customers. Responsibilities Drive supplier quality performance for new product development, ongoing production, and continuous quality improvement of components used in material handling carts, corrals, fixtures, and custom solutions. Perform quality system, process, and product audits on suppliers to ensure high-quality incoming materials and components for metal fabrication and assembly operations. Conduct regular on-site and virtual supplier quality audits to verify compliance with ISO 9001, customer requirements, and applicable regulations. Travel to China and Vietnam 1-2 times per year to work directly with overseas suppliers on quality initiatives and issue resolution. Maintain open, proactive communication with suppliers to resolve issues promptly, address concerns, and foster collaborative, improvement-focused relationships. Interpret and apply manufacturing audits and standards, including ISO 9001 and other standards relevant to metal fabrication and assembly. Initiate, develop, and present supplier improvement plans, and train internal teams and suppliers as needed on quality processes and expectations. Maintain and update a supplier database with performance metrics, evaluation scores, quality audit results, and other key data accessible to manufacturing, engineering, and leadership teams. Serve as a liaison between suppliers and cross-functional internal teams, including Engineering, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Logistics, to align quality requirements and expectations. Review and approve supplier PPAP submissions for new or changed parts before release to production, ensuring that all quality and documentation requirements are met. Prepare and present Operations review reports on supplier and internal quality KPIs, such as PPM, on-time delivery, supplier 8D response timeliness, and corrective actions. Develop countermeasures and annual action plans based on quality performance trends and KPI results to drive ongoing improvement. Support logistics and receiving teams by coordinating with suppliers on packaging, labeling, or delivery issues that impact dock receipt and material flow. Perform other duties as assigned to support quality, operational goals, and cross-functional initiatives. Essential Skills Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or an equivalent technical discipline. 3+ years of experience in a metal forming, fabrication, welding, or related manufacturing environment, such as steel or aluminum cart and fixture production. Hands-on experience in supplier quality and quality engineering within a manufacturing setting. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and cross-functional teams to improve business processes and performance metrics. Proficiency with MS Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, for data analysis, reporting, and presentations. Strong understanding of quality tools and standards, including PPAP, 8D, and root cause analysis methodologies. Ability to interpret and apply ISO 9001 and other relevant manufacturing and quality standards. Demonstrated professionalism in verbal, written, and behavioral communication, with the ability to build strong supplier relationships. Track record of taking ownership of projects, managing tasks effectively, and delivering results in a deadline-driven environment. Ability to work flexible or variable hours and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and collaborative environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working as a Quality Engineer or Supplier Quality Engineer in manufacturing. Background in metal fabrication, metal forming, welding, or assembly operations. Basic experience with SolidWorks or an equivalent CAD system. Proficiency in Mandarin is a plus for collaborating with overseas suppliers. Experience conducting supplier quality audits, both on-site and virtually. Familiarity with maintaining supplier performance databases and quality metrics. Experience preparing and presenting quality performance reports and KPIs to stakeholders. Work Environment This role operates in both office and manufacturing environments. You will sit and stand for a minimum of 8 hours per day with limited breaks and operate a computer extensively for data analysis, reporting, and communication. The position requires detailed visual inspections of parts, processes, and documentation. You will be exposed to varying temperatures in manufacturing and warehouse environments, particularly during supplier audits or plant floor support activities. The role involves occasional travel to supplier locations, both domestic and international, with travel potentially up to 25-30%, including 1-2 trips per year to China and Vietnam to work directly with overseas suppliers. On an $80,000 base salary, the target bonus is 8 percent, or $6,400 annually, paid quarterly at about $1,600 per quarter.
