Job Description

General Summary The Rolling Mill Process Engineer is responsible for analyzing and optimizing processes across the melt shop and rolling mills at Cascade Steel Rolling Mills. This role focuses on identifying and implementing process improvements, equipment upgrades, and systems to measure performance impacts. The engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams, conducts technology studies, and provides training to drive continuous improvement in efficiency and safety. This position requires strong mechanical engineering knowledge, and the ability to communicate technical information effectively across all levels of the organization. Essential Functions Communicate with employees and management about processes and procedures including possible options for process improvement. Analyze each step of processes from scrap preparation to billet handling to identify process improvements within the melt shop. Analyze each step of processes from billet reheat to finished product to identify process improvements within the rolling mills. Analyze various processes for other departments as requested. Identify and implement process improvements and systems to measure impacts to optimize each process. Identify and implement equipment upgrades to improve processes and procedures. Initiate and monitor data from trials to monitor changes. Conduct studies to improve technologies for Cascade Steel Rolling Mills and the steel industry as a whole. Collaborates with other department staff to share and acquire knowledge and skills. Conduct training sessions as necessary. Identify ways to enhance safety throughout processes utilized. Network with other industry professionals and maintain memberships in professional associations. Qualifications 10+ years of experience in Rolling Mill routine. Basic knowledge of Rolling Mill control systems (Reheat furnace combustion, Bar tracking, HMI, IBA), be able to troubleshoot and lead improvements. Experience in Rolling Mill equipment, be able to maintain it, point out possible improvements/replacements. Able to develop new routine and procedures, train the personnel involved. Knowledge of equipment, technologies, terminology, and practices related to rolling mill process. Knowledge of Rolling Mill operation systems and the applicable safety rules and regulations as they apply to job duties. Ability to operate the tools, equipment, hardware and software necessary to perform the duties of this position. This includes working knowledge of and ability to effectively use hand tools, power tools, various meters and Microsoft Office applications. Must possess strong communication skills, both written and oral, and ability to convey technical information to non-technical staff to address questions and/or provide training when necessary. Must possess knowledge and skill in the design, installation and maintenance of rolling mill equipment and automation systems. Must possess the ability to apply mechanical engineering principles and techniques to problem resolution and to accurately instruct other employees in a course of action. Ability to analyze past performance data, prioritize, propose and work with the team to implement action plans to improve overall Rolling Mill performance. Working Environment Work is primarily performed indoors, in both an office environment and in a manufacturing environment. It may require the ability to push/pull up to 50 pounds, and/or to lift/carry up to 20 pounds. When work is necessary in the mill, where individual will be exposed to outdoor and/or plant conditions, PPE is required and will be provided.
