Job Description
Job Title:
Packaging Engineer - Vehicle Programs Job Description The Packaging Engineer - Vehicle Programs develops, validates, and implements specialized containers used to ship components and sub-assemblies into automotive assembly plants. This role collaborates closely with supply base, logistics, and manufacturing stakeholders to design robust packaging solutions that protect part quality, optimize container density, and reduce overall enterprise logistics costs. The position blends hands-on engineering, manufacturing and assembly process knowledge, and strong project management to deliver high first-time-quality packaging solutions in a dynamic, program-driven environment. Responsibilities Develop robust packaging and container solutions that support multiple stakeholders across the supply base, logistics, and manufacturing functions. Design packaging that protects part quality while maximizing container density and optimizing the use of logistics equipment to minimize total enterprise cost. Execute project management activities on multiple container designs and commodities simultaneously to support future vehicle program milestones and on-time deliveries. Create and implement validation protocols, including loading, transportation, and unloading tests, to ensure container designs are durable, safe, and production-ready. Take full technical ownership of packaging solutions at the commodity level, ensuring high first-time quality designs with zero rework wherever possible. Prioritize and manage workload effectively while supporting multiple programs and studies at the same time, working independently to meet goals and key performance indicators. Serve as the technical expert for packaging within assigned commodities and provide guidance on container and logistics strategies for future programs. Lead cross-functional discussions with engineering, logistics, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to identify critical constraints that packaging must address while controlling costs. Use strong communication and computer skills to collaborate effectively across the organization and document designs, requirements, and validation results. Apply 3D modeling and CAD tools to support packaging design and visualization, leveraging systems such as UG-NX and TeamCenter where applicable. Identify and help eliminate waste within logistics, manufacturing, and material handling processes through thoughtful packaging and containerization strategies. Support program launches by traveling to plants within North America as needed to validate packaging performance in real operating conditions and resolve issues on site. Contribute to cost/benefit analyses and business cases for packaging solutions, including returnable container strategies and logistics trade-offs. Utilize problem-solving methodologies, such as Red X or similar approaches, to address packaging-related quality, durability, and handling issues. Collaborate with team members to continuously improve packaging standards, validation protocols, and best practices for automotive containerization. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree, preferably in Industrial Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. More than 2 years of work experience in a manufacturing environment. Education or experience related to packaging design using 3D modeling and design software, including exposure to multiple manufacturing processes and materials. Working knowledge of material handling and manufacturing processes, particularly in an automotive or high-volume production environment. Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with cross-functional teams and suppliers. High level of analytical ability to solve unusual and difficult problems related to packaging, logistics, and manufacturing constraints. Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with others in a large engineering and program environment. Proficiency with personal computer applications and general office software. Hands-on problem-solving ability and willingness to engage directly with packaging, containers, and plant operations. Self-motivation and strong initiative, with the ability to take ownership of tasks and drive them to completion. Solid project management and organizational skills to manage multiple programs, timelines, and deliverables concurrently. Demonstrated ability to work independently with little or no supervision while maintaining high quality and meeting deadlines. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's or Master's degree in Packaging, Industrial Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Education in Packaging, Industrial Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering Technology with relevant packaging experience. Understanding of Lean Manufacturing strategies and quality systems and how packaging interacts with these practices. Good business acumen with strong organizational and strategic agility to balance technical, cost, and timing considerations. Experience in developing cost/benefit analyses and business cases for packaging and logistics solutions. Red X or similar structured problem-solving proficiency. Knowledge of vibration data acquisition and testing for packaging validation. Experience with Unigraphics NX (UG-NX), TeamCenter (TcAE), and Autoweb for design, data management, and collaboration. Familiarity with ISTA or ASTM validation and testing protocols for packaging performance. Experience in automotive manufacturing, including automotive launch activities and containerization for vehicle programs. Returnable container experience and understanding of returnable packaging strategies and logistics. Experience in logistics, packaging engineering, packaging design, and containerization within the automotive industry. Cost and financial experience, including staying on budget for packaging and container programs. Industrial Engineering with exposure to packaging, supply chain, and lineside staging concepts. Interest in or experience with how operators or robots access parts at the line, and how packaging influences ergonomics and automation. Openness to training and further development in packaging engineering if some skills need to be strengthened. Work Environment This role is primarily a hybrid position, typically involving three days in the office and two days working remotely each week. On-site work takes place at a large engineering center that houses approximately 4,000 employees, providing access to a broad network of engineering, logistics, and manufacturing professionals. The immediate team consists of around 60 engineers, organized into smaller groups aligned by part family and vehicle line, creating a collaborative environment with opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues in both program management and core container design. The position operates on a first-shift schedule. Travel requirements are modest, with approximately 10% or less travel expected, mostly local to Southeast Michigan with occasional overnight trips to plants across North America to support program launches and on-site validation. The work involves regular use of 3D modeling and CAD tools such as UG-NX and TeamCenter, as well as standard office and engineering software for analysis, documentation, and communication. The team culture emphasizes professional growth, exposure to new program management skills, and the potential for long-term career opportunities. Consultants historically appreciate the learning environment and the balance between program management responsibilities and hands-on container engineering. The group also organizes periodic team-building events, held with a strong focus on safety. The dress code in the office is business casual.
