The expected hiring range for this position is: $25.72-$31.37. Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Role:
Fermilab is seeking a Mechanical Technician who under limited supervision and based on extensive experience, academic study, and/or expertise, will provide complex technical support for an area of assignment, typically an experimental or support group. Depending on the area of assignment, fabricates, sets-up, calibrates, operates, tests, repairs, and modifies a wide variety of complex electrical-electronic and/or mechanical equipment, systems, and devices, or performs ES&H duties including environmental surveys, waste disposal, and radiological surveys. As assigned, will perform some or all of the following duties: What your day-to-day as a Mechanical Technician at Fermilab will look like: Fabricating, assembling, installing, and removing a variety of mechanical and/or electrical parts, sub-assemblies, controls, and devices for Laboratory projects/equipment in the area of assignment, based on drawings, diagrams, schematics, and as instructed. Assisting in construction, calibration, and assembly of experimental and support equipment for the area of assignment. Preparing and testing equipment for operation. Procuring and maintaining inventories of small parts, supplies, materials, and equipment. Assisting in the implementation and design of equipment and systems. Recording work and measurements in electronic forms. Generating, or assisting in generating Hazard Analyses for as required work tasks Conducting periodic safety inspections of area of assignment. Assisting with the identification, packaging, control, and disposal of radioactive waste. (Training will be provided) Assisting in the implementation of design of equipment and systems. HS degree (or technical certificate or equivalent) 3+ years of extensive experience with mechanical systems. May be substituted with comparable military training. Must be proficient with safe use and show best practices in use of hand-held power tools and hand tools, such as tubing cutters and benders. Experience with brazing and soldering of copper tubing and components is highly preferred. Must show proficiency in light fabrication of parts using mechanical drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions. Must be proficient working in a Windows PC environment, in particular, and with MS Word and Excel applications Ability to work independently following general or detailed verbal or written instructions is required. Responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, safety and health regulations, Laboratory policies, procedures, and practices pertinent to this position. Must have good oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Must show demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a team environment. Ability to work overtime and perform shift work, if requested Desirable, but not required (Training will be provided) Experience with high and ultra-high vacuum systems Experience with machining tools Forklift qualifications Familiarity or experience with handling/or tooling electrical-electronic systems/equipmentPhysical Activity and Work Conditions Human Factors:
Heavy Lifting, Mental Concentration, Sitting, Standing, Tight Work Schedule, Repetitive Motion, Visually Demanding Ability to lift to 50 pounds is required. Ability to work at heights up to 10-feet is required. Ability to work on stairs, ladders, man lifts and to stand for up to 4-hours per day is required. Ability to work within the vicinity of vibrating equipment is required. Ability to work in confined spaces is required. Ability to work in areas of high magnetic fields. Occasionally work outdoors. Occasionally work in hot environments. Ability to legally operate cars and light trucks is required.Physical Factors:
High Voltage and Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (Training will be provided) Ability to meet Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH), tunnel entry, underground, and radiation worker requirements is required. Ability to work with epoxies, solvents, glues, and other chemicals is required.Chemical Factors:
