Apply theory and related knowledge to commission, test and modify developmental or operational mechanical equipment and machinery in a large laboratory environment: Assembles and tests experimental vacuum, water, cryogenic, magnetic, and other equipment and components according to engineering data and knowledge of mechanical principles. Modifies mechanical prototypes to correct functional deviations in coordination with a mechanical engineer or research staff. Diagnoses the cause of malfunction or failure of operational equipment and performs preventative and corrective maintenance. Develop layout drawings and technical procedures for system or equipment modifications and direct personnel performing routine installation and maintenance duties. Plans, directs, and records periodic testing, and recommends or initiates modification or replacement of equipment which fails to meet acceptable operating standards. This position focuses on developing, operating, maintaining, and handling liquid metals for use in experimental devices. Safe handling of Alkali and liquid metals Glovebox operations and maintenance Loading and handling of lithium and other alkali metals (liquid or solid) Mechanical Maintenance and Repairs Perform routine maintenance and general repair of experimental devices, support systems, and experimental facility Proper use of power and hand tools Laboratory Mechanical System Applications and Procedures Create, modify, and run procedures for operating, maintaining, and disabling experimental devices, support systems, and experimental facilities. Installation, Operation, and Repair of Laboratory Equipment Vacuum systems and components Gas Water systems Magnetics Neutral Beams Diagnostics Electrical/electronic devices Lasers Equipment Troubleshooting and Repair Pumps Electrical devices Controls Diagnostics Machine Shop Operation Saws Drill Press Milling Machine Lathe Threading and Tapping Mechanical Drawing and CAD Create, modify, read prints and assembly drawings Pneumatics/Hydraulics Installation, Troubleshooting and Repair pneumatic and hydraulic systems and components (valves, tables, shutters, etc.)Qualifications Education and Experience:
Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent by the start of the program. No experience is needed. This "earn while you learn" apprenticeship program and does not require any degrees or certificates. Candidates with an existing degree or significant work experience in this field may be considered overqualified. The program will enroll the successful candidate into Related Technical Instruction (RTI). Online classes through ToolingU, Creo (CAD), and Compressed gases training, and in person training in Fundamentals of Vacuum technology, Alkali metal safe handling, for the If you are already taken a similar course, you can possibly be credited for those courses towards the program. High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Passionate, dedicated, motivated, time management, problem solving, team player, ready to learn and be challenged. Below are some areas that this apprenticeship will cover, it is not required to have former knowledge or experience in these skills, however it would be beneficial to have some general knowledge going into the program. Reading and understanding technical drawings including power system one-line diagrams, circuit schematics, control wiring diagrams and general arrangement drawings. Basic understanding of computers, electrical/electronic principles, circuits, and safety practices. Familiarity with common hand tools and basic power tools used in the trade. Strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures, particularly Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) and Electrical safety. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately and efficiently. Ability to work in various physical conditions (e.g., confined spaces, heights, varying temperatures). Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work in awkward positions, in narrow or confined spaces, bend, climb, lift and/or move heavy objects up to 50lbs. Must be able to climb ladders or stairs to reach objects; comfortable with heights. May require frequent kneeling, bending, walking and/or standing for long periods of time.Working Conditions:
This position is fully on-site. The candidate must be able to work 40 hours per week and attend classes outside of working hours.
