POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking an experienced Machining Engineer to lead process and fixture engineering for gas turbine blade and vane manufacturing. This role owns the technical strategy for datum structure and datum transfer across the full machining sequence — from casting datums through creep feed grinding, high speed grinding, CNC milling, and EDM — ensuring tolerance stack-up is controlled and repeatable at every operation. The role also includes best-fit analysis of as-cast airfoil geometry to optimize stock allocation and minimize scrap, oversight of outsourced machining suppliers, support for our sister facility in Mexico (up to 50% travel), and evaluation of new equipment for the department. The ideal candidate has deep, hands-on fixturing and GD&T expertise on hard-to-hold superalloy airfoil components. Key Responsibilities Define and own datum structure for turbine blades and vanes across the full process chain, ensuring consistent datum transfer from casting reference features through creep feed grinding, high speed grinding, CNC milling, and EDM operations. Perform best-fit analysis of as-cast airfoil geometry (using CMM/optical scan data) against nominal CAD to determine optimal part orientation, stock allocation, and machining datums prior to first operation. Design and specify fixturing and tooling — including locating schemes, clamping strategy, and datum targets — that maintain GD&T intent and minimize tolerance stack-up across sequential operations. Analyze and control tolerance stack-up across multi-step process plans, identifying where datum shift, fixture repeatability, or locating scheme changes introduce risk to final part conformance. Develop creep feed and high speed grinding processes for airfoil platforms, root forms, and fir-tree/dovetail attachments, including wheel selection, dressing strategy, and coolant/feed optimization for superalloys. Program and validate CNC milling operations (3
- 4• and 5-axis) and sinker/wire EDM processes for airfoil contours, cooling holes, and fine-feature machining on nickel•and cobalt-based alloys.
Lead root cause investigation on datum-related nonconformances (e.g., locating error, fixture wear, repeatability drift, recast/HAZ issues) and implement corrective fixturing or process changes. Author and maintain process plans, datum schemes, work instructions, and first-article documentation in compliance with
AS9100/NADCAP
requirements. Review, audit, and manage outsourced machining work performed by external suppliers, including process and fixture approval, datum scheme review, and on-site supplier visits. Travel to and from our sister facility in Mexico to support process transfer, fixture/datum standardization, training, and quality alignment between sites (up to 50% travel). Evaluate, specify, and recommend new equipment purchases for grinding, CNC milling, and EDM operations, including ROI justification and vendor coordination. Partner with NDT, dimensional inspection, and design engineering to resolve casting and machining nonconformances tied to datum or fixturing issues. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field; equivalent combination of education and significant hands-on process/fixture engineering experience considered. 5+ years of experience in precision machining process engineering, with demonstrated expertise in datum strategy, datum transfer, and fixture design for tight-tolerance components. Strong command of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and ability to translate drawing requirements into locating schemes, datum target placement, and tolerance stack-up analysis. Experience performing best-fit alignment of as-cast or as-forged geometry to nominal CAD for stock allocation and machining setup optimization. Hands-on process development experience with creep feed grinding and/or high speed grinding in an aerospace or precision manufacturing environment. Proficiency in CNC milling process planning and CAM programming (e.g., Mastercam, NX, or similar). Experience with sinker EDM and/or wire EDM process development on superalloy or hard-metal components. Working knowledge of nickel
- and cobalt-based superalloys (e.
g., Inconel, Rene, CMSX, MarM) and their machinability and fixturing challenges. Experience with precision metrology (CMM, optical scanning) for datum verification, best-fit analysis, and fixture qualification. Familiarity with
AS9100/NADCAP
quality systems and documentation practices. Preferred Qualifications Direct experience with fixture/tooling design for gas turbine blades, vanes, or other rotating/static airfoil components. Experience designing datum target schemes or modular fixturing systems for multi-operation process chains. Experience supporting capacity planning, cycle time reduction, or lean manufacturing initiatives. Experience managing or auditing outsourced/contract machining suppliers. Bilingual (English/Spanish) and prior experience working with or traveling to Mexico-based manufacturing facilities. Experience evaluating and justifying capital equipment purchases for machining operations. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Combination of engineering office and manufacturing shop floor environment; regular exposure to coolant, grinding dust, and machine noise during fixture trials and process validation. Ability to stand for extended periods on the shop floor and lift up to 35 lbs. Availability for assigned shift; flexibility to support production schedules as needed. Ability to travel domestically and internationally (primarily to Mexico) up to 50% of the time, including extended stays as needed to support process transfer and supplier oversight. Valid passport required (or ability to obtain one) for international travel. What We Offer Competitive pay based on experience and skill level. Medical, dental, and vision insurance. 401(k) with company match. Paid time off and holidays. Opportunities for training, certification, and career advancement within precision machining and manufacturing engineering.
