Job Description

What to Expect The Senior Automation Design Engineer plays a pivotal role in enhancing Tesla's manufacturing efficiency by designing and optimizing automation lines in collaboration with equipment suppliers and integrators. This position focuses on critically evaluating production line assembly concepts, ensuring cost-effectiveness in supplier RFQs, and implementing innovative automation solutions to reduce cycle times and labor dependency. Working closely with internal teams and external partners, this role drives significant cost reductions and operational improvements across manufacturing processes. What You'll Do Spearhead the growth of the Automation Design Team with the Supplier CapEx Team Work with cross-functional Tesla teams to gather project requirements Design Turnkey Automation systems in 3D CAD models in Solidworks/CATIA. Create 2D Drawing Documentation packages with GD&T Assist in on-site mechanical debug of systems during post SAT periods Standardize 3D component Library and Enclosures for full designs of key mechanical automation equipment Collaborate with equipment integrators to design and refine assembly lines, tooling, and automation equipment for maximum efficiency and cost-effectiveness Perform thorough reviews of production line assembly concepts in RFQs to automate labor-intensive processes and prevent supplier overcharging Lead the identification and integration of automation solutions to minimize manual labor and boost production efficiency Drive cost savings through accurate RFQ assessments, process optimization, and elimination of unnecessary expenses Utilize SolidWorks and CATIA to review and improve line designs, CAD models, and simulations to meet cost and efficiency standard What You'll Bring 5+ years of experience in the automation industry as a mechanical design engineer or applications engineer Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience Extensive experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, and UGNX, including the ability to design fixtures and stations Proven track record of owning automation assembly line project designs Strong expertise in manufacturing processes, assembly line design, and cost management Demonstrated ability to collaborate with equipment integrators and optimize production line tools and systems Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to travel up to 30% of the time Compensation and Benefits Benefits Along with competitive pay, as a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire: Medical plans > plan options with $0 payroll deduction Family-building, fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans, both have options with a $0 paycheck contribution Company Paid (Health Savings Accounts) HSA Contribution when enrolled in the High-Deductible medical plan with HSA Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) 401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, and other financial benefits Company paid Basic Life, AD&D Short-term and long-term disability insurance (90 day waiting period) Employee Assistance Program Sick and Vacation time (Flex time for salary positions, Accrued hours for Hourly positions), and Paid Holidays Back-up childcare and parenting support resources Voluntary benefits to include: critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, theft & legal services, and pet insurance Weight Loss and Tobacco Cessation Programs Tesla Babies program Commuter benefits Employee discounts and perks program Expected Compensation $132,000 - $240,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
