Job Description

NPD ENGINEER POSITION SUMMARY
The NPD Engineer is a hands-on engineering role responsible for building, assembling, testing, and rapidly prototyping new products. Based at our Post Falls, Idaho facility, this position transforms engineering concepts into physical prototypes, validates designs through hands-on evaluation, and provides critical feedback to accelerate product development. The role works closely with both engineering and manufacturing teams and requires strong technical capability, sound judgment, and practical shop-floor experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Rapid Prototyping & Build Build and assemble prototype machines, subsystems, and test fixtures from engineering designs Execute rapid prototyping using various fabrication methods (3D printing, machining, sheet metal, etc.) Modify and iterate prototypes based on test results and engineering feedback Source and procure prototype components; manage prototype BOM and inventory Document build processes, assembly sequences, and lessons learned Validate parts and subsystems through hands-on builds and evaluations Hands-On Testing & Validation Perform functional testing, performance validation, and stress testing on prototypes Design and build custom test setups and fixtures as needed Identify design issues, failure modes, and improvement opportunities through hands-on evaluation Conduct first article inspections (FAI) and validation testing for new designs Document test results with detailed observations, photos, and videos Track production issues and coordinate with engineering to support timely resolution Engineering Feedback & Collaboration Relay hands-on findings, design feedback, and DFM/DFA recommendations to the remote engineering team Participate in design reviews with practical, build-based insights Collaborate with remote mechanical and embedded engineers on design iterations Provide input on manufacturability, assembly challenges, and tolerance issues Support engineering change processes with prototype-based validation Partner with test personnel to improve machine testing feedback loops and issue resolution Production Transition Support Support transition from prototype to production-ready designs Collaborate with the Test Technician on test protocol development Assist with production ramp-up, first builds, and process validation Bridge communication between remote engineering and local production teams
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical, industrial, manufacturing) or equivalent experience 5+ years of hands-on experience in product development, prototyping, or manufacturing engineering Proven experience building and testing industrial or electromechanical products Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and CAD models Proficiency with shop tools, fabrication equipment, and assembly techniques Experience with rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, CNC, sheet metal fabrication)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with industrial machinery, automation equipment, or similar products CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar) for design modifications Experience working with globally distributed engineering teams Background in test fixture design and fabrication Familiarity with embedded systems and hardware-software integration Experience supporting product transitions from prototype to production Welding, machining, or advanced fabrication skills
WORK ENVIRONMENT
On-site at Post Falls, ID engineering lab and production facility Primarily hands-on work in a prototype lab, machine shop, and production environment Requires standing, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs; use of hand and power tools required
