Job Description

Job Title:
Machining Engineer Job Description We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Machining Engineer to join an innovative manufacturing team that designs and produces a broad range of industrial electrical technologies. This role combines hands-on work on the shop floor with office-based engineering activities to design, develop, and optimize CNC machining processes for high-volume and precision manufacturing. The Machining Engineer will play a key role in new machinery projects, continuous improvement initiatives, and the development of new and improved industrial electrical solutions, including motors, drives, soft starters, controls, panels, transformers, generators, and custom products. Responsibilities Design, develop, and optimize CNC machining processes using CAD/CAM software, ensuring efficient, repeatable, and high-quality production. Use SolidWorks to create and modify models, drawings, and toolpaths that support machining operations and new product or process introductions. Lead CNC machining process development and optimization for new and existing equipment, including machine load evaluation, capacity planning, and successful production launch. Support new machinery projects by assessing machine capacity, defining machining strategies, and coordinating process readiness for production. Apply advanced knowledge of machining methods, tooling strategies, materials, and GD&T to improve part quality, reduce cycle times, and increase overall equipment effectiveness. Troubleshoot and resolve complex machining issues through root cause analysis, process redesign, and implementation of corrective actions. Drive continuous improvement initiatives on the shop floor to enhance productivity, reduce scrap, and improve process stability. Collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams to implement process improvements, support day-to-day production, and maintain operational excellence. Work approximately 50% of the time on the shop floor, 25% on CNC programming, and 25% in the office managing small to medium projects, with a planned transition to larger projects and new process development over time. Contribute to process validation and support new product introduction activities as needed to ensure robust and capable machining processes. Communicate clearly with cross-functional teams regarding process changes, project status, and technical issues related to machining operations. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field. At least 5 years of experience in CNC machining process engineering or CNC programming. Strong experience with CAM software, with SolidCAM preferred. Proficiency with SolidWorks, including creating and modifying models and drawings to support machining processes. Advanced understanding of machining processes, tooling, and materials used in CNC operations. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, optimize, and redesign complex CNC machining processes. Experience leading CNC machining process development and optimization for new and existing equipment. Ability to perform machine load evaluation and support capacity planning for new machinery projects. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to perform root cause analysis on machining issues. Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with Swiss-style CNC programming. Experience supporting new product introduction or process validation activities. Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies. Experience working in high-volume or precision manufacturing environments. Comfort working both on the shop floor and in an office setting, managing multiple projects and priorities. Ability to adapt to evolving responsibilities as the role grows into larger projects and new process development. Work Environment This is a full-time, on-site role based in a manufacturing facility that produces electric motors and related industrial electrical products. Typical working hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the possibility of working one planned Saturday per quarter. The Machining Engineer splits time between the shop floor and the office, working closely with quality, production, and other engineering departments. The facility has approximately 100 employees and operates as a union shop; however, this position focuses primarily on engineering duties and regular interaction with machinery rather than union-related matters. The manufacturing and machining areas may expose you to oil, coolant, and metal residue, and you will regularly work around CNC equipment and related production machinery. The environment supports collaboration, cross-functional teamwork, and ongoing investment in state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and processes.
