Job Description

Job Title:
Process Engineer (Casting QA Engineer) Job Description This Process Engineer (Casting QA Engineer) role focuses on improving and monitoring casting processes in a tier 1 automotive manufacturing environment. The engineer spends the majority of their time on the shop floor, troubleshooting equipment, reducing defects, and driving process improvements for cast iron products. This position combines hands-on mechanical work with analytical engineering responsibilities, including tooling design, casting simulation, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to enhance quality, efficiency, and reliability. Responsibilities Monitor casting processes on the shop floor and lead defect reduction activities through hands-on floor management. Troubleshoot machines and production issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective and preventive actions. Plan, design, and support the development of new tools, fixtures, jigs, gating systems, risers, and runners based on 3D drawings and blueprints. Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports to guide process and product decisions. Confer with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information. Research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and related data to evaluate feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements. Specify system components or direct product modifications to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications. Research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical products, equipment, systems, and processes using sound engineering principles. Investigate scrap and defects in castings, lead cross-functional teams in root cause analysis, and develop and execute corrective and mitigation plans. Use CAD software, particularly CATIA, to model and support the design of tooling and process improvements. Provide feedback to design engineers regarding customer problems, product performance, and opportunities for improvement. Conduct trials and experiments, track progress, analyze results, develop reports, and present findings to stakeholders. Recommend design modifications to improve current or proposed products and processes. Develop and test models of alternate designs and processing methods to assess feasibility, operating conditions, and potential new applications. Use hand tools and power tools to build and adjust gating, risering, and runner systems on the shop floor. Perform personnel-related functions such as supervising production workers, technicians, technologists, or other engineers, or contributing to the design of evaluation programs, as needed. Learn and apply MAGMA simulation software to support casting process modeling and optimization. Apply understanding of ferrous microstructures, layout devices, tools, and measuring techniques to ensure casting quality and dimensional accuracy. Write performance requirements for product development and engineering projects to guide design and validation activities. Perform audits of non-conforming material internally and at customer facilities, and support containment and improvement actions. Support tooling maintenance and evaluation across multiple facilities to ensure reliability and consistency of casting operations. Contribute to achieving company and departmental health and safety goals by following and promoting safe work practices. Essential Skills Proven experience in process engineering or process improvement in a manufacturing environment, ideally involving castings or cast iron. Hands-on mechanical aptitude, including comfort working with tools and machinery and performing practical troubleshooting on the shop floor. Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams to resolve quality and process issues. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and engineering documentation. Experience using computer-assisted design (CAD) software, specifically CATIA, for modeling and design support. Experience with casting simulation software, such as MAGMA or similar simulation and modeling tools. Ability to research and analyze design proposals, specifications, and manuals to evaluate feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements. Understanding of system components and ability to specify or modify them to meet engineering and performance requirements. Capability to conduct trials, track progress, and prepare clear technical reports and presentations. Functional use of hand tools and power tools for building and adjusting gating, risering, and runner systems. Ability to perform audits of non-conforming material and support corrective actions. Strong communication skills for collaborating with engineers, production teams, and customers. Commitment to health and safety and adherence to established safety procedures. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with MAGMA or

casting simulation software. Experience in a foundry environment, particularly with cast iron processes. Familiarity with PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) and APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) in an automotive context. Engineering degree or related technical degree. Experience in automotive manufacturing or as a supplier to automotive OEMs. Exposure to ferrous microstructures, layout tools, and precision measuring techniques. Experience supervising or coordinating work with production workers, technicians, or other engineers. Interest in gaining deeper automotive and foundry experience and growing within a technical engineering career path. Work Environment This role is based in a casting-focused automotive manufacturing facility, working closely with a team of engineers and collaborating frequently with a hands-on manager. Approximately 70% of the work takes place on the shop floor in a production environment, involving direct interaction with casting equipment, tooling, and mechanical systems. The position follows a first-shift schedule, typically from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with many engineers working until around 4:00 p.m. Overtime varies by day and departmental needs.
