Job Summary:
We are looking for a Design Engineer to join our team at our Menominee, MI facility, where you'll be part of a close‑knit, collaborative design group focused on hose couplings. In this role, you'll have the opportunity to take ownership of your own design projects while also partnering with experienced engineers on more complex initiatives, including New Product Introduction (NPI) and New Source Introduction efforts. You'll work closely with a strong network of engineers, manufacturers, and suppliers, gaining hands‑on experience throughout the full product lifecycle—from initial design concepts to production. This role also plays a key part in supporting Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) initiatives to help maintain and enhance product quality and performance. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys both independent and team‑based work, is eager to grow technically, and wants to make a direct impact by helping deliver reliable, high‑quality products to our customers.
What You Will Do:
This position focuses on product and process quality with a zero‑defect mindset, while supporting program timelines and cost goals for hose coupling products. Create design concepts and drawings for hose couplings and related components that meet functional and technical requirements, cost and weight targets, quality standards, and manufacturing capabilities. Perform stress analysis of designs using tools such as Creo Simulate or other FEA software to ensure durability and performance under operating conditions. Support validation activities, including lab testing, field trials, and product performance evaluations to ensure reliability and customer satisfaction. Support and lead APQP activities, including DFMEA development, validation planning, and production readiness efforts. Collaborate with external suppliers, manufacturing facilities, engineering partners, and the core Product Group to support product development, sourcing, and continuous improvement initiatives. Work closely with suppliers to ensure designs align with manufacturability requirements and support successful production and sourcing transitions.
Education requirement:
Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering or other STEM related curriculum.
What skills you will have:
Technical Excellence:
Proficiency in designing hose couplings and fluid transfer components to meet performance, durability, and quality requirements. Working knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools to simulate structural behavior and optimize designs for reliability and efficiency. Familiarity with ANSYS, Abaqus, or Creo Simulate for structural and thermal analysis. Ability to interpret and apply engineering standards, GD&T, and tolerance stack‑ups. Knowledge of DFMEA to proactively identify and mitigate potential design risks. Product Design -
MFG:
Experience collaborating with suppliers to improve design for manufacturability (DFM) for hose coupling components. Coordinates with cross‑functional teams, including procurement, production, and quality, to align design solutions with manufacturing capabilities. Understanding of DFMA principles to reduce complexity, cost, and improve production efficiency. Proficiency with PLM systems such as Teamcenter or Windchill. Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as machining, forming, assembly, and joining methods commonly used in fluid system components.
Product Design and Development:
Develops creative and effective design solutions that meet functional requirements of hose coupling systems. Conducts material selection and analysis to ensure performance, durability, and cost‑effectiveness under various operating conditions. Proficiency in Creo (Pro/ENGINEER) for modeling and detailed design. Ability to create and manage BOMs and engineering change documentation. Participates in design reviews, validation testing, and product development activities to ensure performance and compliance with specifications.
Effective Communication:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with engineering teams, suppliers, manufacturing, and purchasing partners. Clearly documents and presents design concepts, technical data, and project updates. Comfortable working in a global team environment using collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and SharePoint. Prepares technical reports, design justifications, and engineering documentation. Participates in and contributes to design reviews, brainstorming sessions, and cross‑functional meetings.
Additional Information:
This position requires the candidate to work onsite five days a week at the Menominee, MI office. Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position. Visa sponsorship is NOT available with this position. This position may require 10% travel.
Summary Pay Range:
$89,210.00 - $133,810.00 Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
