Job Description

Epitec is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to join our automotive client's team in Detroit, MI. As a Controls Engineer, the candidate will play a pivotal role in maintaining and optimizing automated production systems, ensuring manufacturing equipment runs efficiently, safely, and with minimal downtime through hands-on troubleshooting, controls programming, and continuous system improvement. This begins as an 18 month W2 contract with potential for conversion/extension This is 3rd shift, midnights position This position offers $61.25/hour, 10 days PTO, medical & retirement contributions (if desired) Overtime expected and paid at time & a half
Top Responsibilities:
Design and implement control systems for industrial automation and manufacturing equipment Program, modify, and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems supporting production Diagnose and resolve issues on production machining and assembly equipment (hands-on in plant ~50% of time) Integrate sensors, actuators, and automation components into control systems Perform system testing, debugging, and optimization to improve uptime and performance Support maintenance and operations teams with technical troubleshooting and issue resolution Maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control documentation Ensure systems meet safety standards and industrial automation regulations Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers on system integration and fixes Document issues, create reports, and support shift hand-offs for ongoing production work
Top Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in controls engineering or industrial automation Strong PLC programming skills (Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens) Experience with HMI and SCADA systems Experience with industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus) Hands-on troubleshooting experience in a manufacturing/plant environment Experience with Siemens platforms (TIA Portal, Step 7, 840D) — strong preference Exposure to robotics (Fanuc or KUKA) — big plus Ability to read electrical schematics and understand control theory Experience with automated equipment maintenance and system optimization #LI-RH1 #INDPRO
