Job Description

Mustad North America is seeking a Smart Manufacturing & Forging Process Optimization Intern to help modernize and enhance our precision forging operations. This role focuses on applying sensors, CAD, data capture, PLC programming, and global technology research to solve real manufacturing challenges. You won't just observe — you'll work directly with engineering, tooling, maintenance, and production teams to tackle manufacturing pain points, explore innovative solutions, and bring modern technology into the shop floor. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain exposure to sensors, CAD, PLC programming, data analysis, and global best practices — applying what you've learned in school to solve practical problems. What You'll Do Analyze and improve forging process challenges such as die alignment, repeatability, and process variability
  • Identify opportunities to integrate sensors for force, temperature, displacement, vibration, and alignment monitoring
  • Assist in capturing and analyzing process variables through PLC programming and data collection systems
  • Research emerging global technologies and benchmark best practices
  • Evaluate solution feasibility, readiness level, ROI, and implementation risk
  • Support pilot tests, prototype concepts, and proof-of-value trials
  • Document findings and present structured recommendations to engineering team What We're Looking For Students pursuing Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical fields
  • Strong interest in smart manufacturing, automation, and process optimization
  • Familiarity with sensors, data acquisition, PLC concepts, or control systems
  • Analytical mindset with curiosity to research and evaluate global best practices Comfortable working hands-on in a manufacturing environment This internship provides direct exposure to advanced manufacturing innovation — combining mechanical systems, automation, and data-driven improvement in a real manufacturing operation.
