Basic Job Functions:
Altenloh, Brinck & Co. US, Inc. manufactures and distributes engineered fasteners under the SPAX® brand for the construction market, TRUFAST® for the commercial roofing industry and TRUFAST Walls® for exterior building envelopes and facades. The Manufacturing Systems & Automation Engineer is responsible for the strategic development, standardization, integration, and continuous improvement of manufacturing technology across ABC operations. This role provides leadership for automation systems, controls architecture, industrial networking, robotics, machine connectivity, and manufacturing technology initiatives that improve safety, quality, productivity, reliability, and operational performance. The Manufacturing Systems & Automation Engineer develops and executes long-term technology strategies that reduce operational risk, improve equipment supportability, strengthen manufacturing capabilities, and position ABC to leverage automation and digital manufacturing technologies to support future growth. Essential Responsibilities:
Manufacturing Technology Strategy:
Develop and execute the long-term manufacturing technology strategy supporting automation, controls, digital manufacturing, machine connectivity, and operational excellence initiatives Identify opportunities to leverage automation, robotics, machine vision, advanced controls, and manufacturing technologies to improve safety, quality, productivity, and operational performance Evaluate emerging technologies and establish implementations strategies aligned with business objectives Support capital planning through development of business cases, ROI analysis, and technology investment recommendations Develop technology standards that support long-term scalability, maintainability, and operations support
Automation Development & Innovation:
Lead automation initiatives that improve manufacturing performance, labor efficiency, quality, and operational consistency Identify, evaluate, and implement automation technologies including robotics, machine vision systems, automated material handling, advanced controls, and process automation solutions Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering and Quality teams to identify automation opportunities and prioritize implementation efforts Support new equipment design and procurement by establishing automation and controls requirements Drive continuous improvement through application of automation technologies and manufacturing innovation
Equipment Standardization & Lifecycle Management:
Establish and maintain approved standards for PLCs, HMIs, drives, motion control systems, robotics, sensor, industrial networks, and machine controls Develop common equipment architectures across ABC operations to improve maintainability, reliability, training effectiveness, and spare part management Identify equipment and controls systems approaching obsolescence and develop replacement strategies and contingency plans Establish critical spare parts strategies and technology lifecycle plans to reduce operational risk Support long-term capital planning through equipment modernizations and technology refresh initiatives
Manufacturing Systems & Connectivity:
Lead initiatives to improve machine connectivity, manufacturing data collection, and system integration Develop remote access and remote support capabilities that improve troubleshooting, support responsiveness, and equipment uptime Support implementation of production monitoring systems, downtime tracking systems, OEE reporting, machine performance analytics, and manufacturing dashboards Partner with IT to strengthen industrial network reliability, cybersecurity, and operational technology standards Support digital manufacturing initiatives across all facilities
Controls Governance & Technical Standards:
Establish and maintain controls programming standards, documentation standards, backup procedures, and version control systems Ensure consistency of automation architecture across manufacturing operations Maintain accurate documentation for control systems, network architecture, machine communications, and automation infrastructure Support disaster recovery planning and controls system contingency strategies Develop and maintain engineering standards that improve system reliability and supportability
Project Leadership & Capital Execution:
Lead automation and manufacturing technology projects from concept through implementation Develop project scopes, budgets, timelines, and resource requirements Manage equipment suppliers, system integrators, contractors, and technical partners Ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and meet operational expectations Support equipment acceptance testing, commissioning, startup, and performance validation
Operational Support & Reliability:
Provide advanced technical support for manufacturing controls, automation systems, robotics, machine vision systems, and industrial networks Lead root cause investigations for recurring automation and controls failures Partner with Maintenance and Operations teams to improve equipment reliability and manufacturing performance Support preventative maintenance and predictive maintenance strategies for automation systems
Technical Leadership & Capability Development:
Serve as the organization's technical leader for manufacturing automation and systems engineering Provide training, mentoring, and technical guidance to maintenance, engineering, and operations personnel Develop internal technical capabilities and reduce dependency on external resources where practical Support succession planning and knowledge retention related to critical automation systems Promote continuous learning and advancement of manufacturing technology throughout the organization The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list and additional tasks may be assigned from time to time ; or the scope of the job may change as necessitated by business demands.
