Job Description:
Varland Plating is seeking an Automation Software Engineer to help develop and maintain modern industrial software and operational technology (OT) systems within our electroplating operations. This role focuses primarily on industrial software development, SCADA/HMI systems, automation integration, and plant data infrastructure. The position is ideal for someone who enjoys working across industrial software, controls, databases, and manufacturing systems rather than traditional electrical design or wiring work. You will help build and improve systems using technologies such as CODESYS, Ignition, InfluxDB, and Grafana while collaborating closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, and IT personnel. Responsibilities Develop and maintain industrial automation software and control systems Program and support PLC/control logic using CODESYS Design and maintain
HMI/SCADA
applications using Ignition Develop plant data infrastructure, visualization, and historization systems Work with InfluxDB, Grafana, and related tools to support operational analytics Integrate industrial equipment, sensors, and communications systems Assist with system architecture, controls design, and automation standards Support OT networking and integration with IT systems Troubleshoot automation, communications, and software-related production issues Participate in modernization and continuous improvement projects across the facility Desired Experience We are open to candidates from a variety of backgrounds including industrial automation, software engineering, SCADA development, systems integration, or operational technology. Experience in some or all of the following is preferred: PLC or industrial controls programming CODESYS or
IEC 61131-3
environments Ignition
SCADA/HMI
development Python, C#, Java, or other programming languages SQL and/or time-series databases InfluxDB / Grafana / TIG stack Industrial networking and communications protocols OT/IT systems integration Manufacturing or industrial systems Additional Information This position is primarily focused on software, systems integration, and automation architecture. On-site maintenance and electrical personnel handle most field wiring and electrical installation activities. The engineer in this role may assist with controls hardware specification and system design but is not expected to function primarily as an electrical designer or wiring technician.
