Job Description
Design Engineer - Fire SystemsPosition Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented Design Engineer - Fire Systems to design, develop, and deliver fire protection and detection systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. The role focuses on creating compliant, constructible designs using AutoCAD and SolidWorks, preparing schematics and low-voltage drawings, applying NFPA codes and industry best practices, and coordinating with project teams, clients, and contractors to ensure reliable, code-compliant fire systems.
Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop detailed designs and shop drawings for fire protection and fire detection systems using AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
Prepare low-voltage schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts for fire alarm and detection systems.
Apply NFPA standards and local codes to ensure designs meet regulatory and safety requirements.
Calculate hydraulic demands, pipe sizing, and layout for wet, dry, and special hazard sprinkler systems where applicable.
Coordinate with architects, MEP engineers, contractors, and clients to integrate fire systems into building designs and resolve constructability issues.
Produce Bill of Materials (BOM), equipment schedules, and specifications for procurement and installation.
Review submittals, shop drawings, and as-built documentation to verify compliance and completeness.
Conduct design reviews, QA/QC checks, and incorporate feedback to maintain high quality and consistent documentation.
Provide technical support during installation, commissioning, and testing of fire systems, and assist with troubleshooting.
Keep up to date with industry trends, NFPA code changes, and new products in fire protection and detection technologies.
QualificationsBachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.3+ years of experience designing fire protection and fire alarm/detection systems, preferably in commercial or industrial projects.
Proficiency with AutoCAD; experience with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD tools preferred.
Strong knowledge of NFPA standards (e.g., NFPA 13, 72, 25) and applicable local codes and permitting processes.
Experience preparing low-voltage schematics, wiring diagrams, and understanding of semi and low-voltage systems.
Ability to create clear schematics, layouts, and technical documentation for fabrication and installation.
Familiarity with hydraulic calculations, pipe sizing, and sprinkler system layout.
Excellent communication and coordination skills to work with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Professional licensure (PE) or NICET certification in fire protection is a plus.
