Job Description
Job Title:
Manufacturing Engineer Job Description The Manufacturing Engineer will play a critical role in building, testing, qualifying, and producing next-generation spacecraft in a low-rate, high-complexity manufacturing environment. This position focuses on applying innovative solutions and advanced technologies to solve complex manufacturing and engineering challenges at both the system and component levels. The engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure a smooth transition from development to production, while maintaining a strong emphasis on quality, efficiency, reliability, and continuous improvement. Responsibilities Serve as the primary technical contact for production-related issues, ensuring rapid resolution and implementing robust long-term corrective actions. Manage non-conforming materials and lead root cause investigations using structured problem-solving techniques such as Fishbone Diagrams, Fault Tree Analysis, and DMAIC. Create, update, and maintain shop orders, work instructions, and standard operating procedures to support a consistent and efficient production flow. Develop and maintain troubleshooting documentation for production test hardware to enable efficient fault isolation and repair. Collaborate closely with design, quality, and test engineering teams to support both development and production programs for spacecraft components and systems. Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, 5S, and other Operational Excellence methodologies to enhance quality, reduce cycle time, and improve throughput. Support the integration, testing, and troubleshooting of mechanical and electronic systems at component, subsystem, and system levels. Apply direct manufacturing and process control principles to stabilize production processes and ensure repeatable, high-quality output. Conduct cycle time studies and data analysis to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for process optimization and new production process development. Handle and disposition nonconformances in a timely and structured manner, ensuring proper documentation and feedback into design and process improvements. Contribute to the development of new manufacturing processes and assembly methods that support the build of a satellite constellation and other advanced space hardware. Prepare and refine technical documentation, including test plans, standard operating procedures, and troubleshooting guides, to support training and knowledge transfer on the production floor. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience. Experience working in low-rate, high-complexity manufacturing environments, such as aerospace, medical devices, or automotive. Hands-on manufacturing engineering experience with testing, troubleshooting, mechanical systems, and electronic systems. Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles, 5S, and Six Sigma methodologies. Proficiency in root cause analysis methodologies, including Fishbone Diagrams, Fault Tree Analysis, and DMAIC. Experience in creating and updating work instructions and standard operating procedures to support production. Solid understanding of manufacturing processes, quality control, and production systems. Experience in direct manufacturing, process control, and handling nonconformances. Ability to perform cycle time studies and use data analysis for process optimization and continuous improvement. Strong skills in manufacturing process development, assembly, and process improvement in mature manufacturing organizations. Technical writing skills sufficient to clearly document processes, instructions, and production-related guidance. Additional Skills & Qualifications Proficiency with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, NX, or Unigraphics for supporting manufacturing and tooling design. Experience with automated manufacturing processes and test methods at component, subsystem, and system levels. Knowledge of QTP/ATP, functional testing, and environmental testing, including thermal, acoustic, and vibration testing. Strong electrical system design, metrology, and mechanical failure analysis. Experience in Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma with a track record of driving continuous improvement initiatives. Experience being on the ground floor of production ramp-up in complex manufacturing environments. Exposure to industries such as medical devices, automotive, or aerospace, particularly in mature manufacturing organizations. Demonstrated ability to develop new production processes and optimize existing manufacturing workflows. Advanced technical writing capabilities for documentation such as test plans, SOPs, and troubleshooting guides. Work Environment The role operates in a front-half day shift schedule within a high-technology manufacturing and test environment focused on building a satellite constellation and other advanced spacecraft hardware. The engineer will spend time both on the production floor and in an office or lab setting, working closely with cross-functional engineering and operations teams. The work involves interaction with mechanical and electronic systems, production test hardware, and automated manufacturing and test equipment. The environment emphasizes safety, quality, continuous improvement, and operational excellence, with a structured approach to documentation, process control, and problem solving.
