Job Description

Blue Marble Space is hiring a Laboratory Scientist for sensor development. The 1-year position (extendable depending on funding) requires physical presence in Mountain View, CA, and is therefore not remote. The laboratory is located at NASA Ames Research Center, a US federal facility, and therefore requires pre-existing authorization to work in the USA. Relocation costs and visa sponsorships are not available. The Electronic Nose (E-Nose) project has been developed at NASA Ames Research Center over the last twenty-plus years and has been used in a wide variety of applications, both on the ground and aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Blue Marble Space is looking to hire a staff scientist to assist NASA with the development and improvement of E-Nose and work with the lead scientist on this effort. This work includes a general characterization of the current E-Nose sensor chips, which have already been manufactured. This characterization will examine the response of the various sensor elements to various chemicals. After understanding the responses of these basic groups to the various sensor elements, the analysis of how the sensor responds to more complex chemicals will be investigated and compared with the initial, simpler cases. Long-term, a sensor will be developed that can be tailored specifically to the chemical of interest for various applications. This position requires skills and experience in the following areas: Hands-on laboratory and equipment skills Analysis and interpretation of large data sets, ultimately leading to using AI and machine learning General engineering and scientific principles Material Science and Chemistry Programming in multiple scientific language (i.e., C++, LabVIEW, Python) Electrical and Computer Engineering Knowledge of Nanomaterial development, properties, and handling Knowledge of Sensor Development and electrical signals
Education:
Ph.D. in science or engineering fields preferred (outstanding MS holders will be considered), with preference given to degree-holders in Material Science, Chemistry, and/or Electrical Engineering.
About Blue Marble Space:
BMS is a non-profit research institute. Employees have access to a wide array of benefits, including HMO/PPO options for health/dental insurance, life insurance, and a matching 403 (b) retirement plan.
