Greenfield, Indiana About Civan Lasers Civan Lasers develops high-power Dynamic Beam Lasers for advanced welding applications. As the company expands, this role will help ensure success solving our customers' welding-related challenges. Position Summary The Welding Engineer is a central member of the application lab team and plays a key role in developing, optimizing, and supporting high-power laser welding applications for customers. This position focuses on understanding customer requirements, developing welding parameters, analyzing weld quality, and driving continuous improvement through testing, reporting, and collaboration. The role also serves as an important technical interface with customers, internal teams, and external industry organizations as the company expands. Key Responsibilities Develop, refine, and validate welding parameters for high-power laser welding applications across a range of customer materials, joints, and performance requirements. Work closely with customers and internal stakeholders to understand application requirements and quality criteria to recommend and develop appropriate laser welding solutions. Plan and execute welding trials in the application lab, including sample preparation, process setup, data collection, and documentation of results. Analyze welded samples using visual inspection, cross-sections, metallurgical evaluation, and other relevant techniques to assess weld quality and identify opportunities for improvement. Create, review, improve, and maintain technical reports that clearly communicate welding procedures, trial results, observations, conclusions, and recommended next steps. Share results, lessons learned, and best practices with other application labs and cross-functional teams to support global learning and consistency. Travel to customer sites to support technical service activities, laser installations, and other support as needed. Provide support to customers by conducting demonstrations, answering welding-related questions, discussing application feasibility, and help troubleshoot process challenges. Represent the company in technical presentations at conferences, webinars, trade events, and customer-facing forums as needed. Maintain active involvement with relevant welding organizations, industry societies, code committees, and standards groups to stay current on best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory developments. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or another engineering discipline with a welding emphasis. Minimum 1 to 3 years of applicable experience (see points below for examples of "applicable experience") Strong understanding of welding processes, welding codes, weld quality requirements, and process-development methodologies. Ability to interpret customer requirements and translate them into practical welding parameters, testing plans, and technical recommendations. Experience analyzing welded samples and using test results to drive process improvements. Strong technical writing and communication skills, including the ability to produce clear reports and present findings effectively to customers and internal teams. Ability to work collaboratively in a hands-on lab environment while also supporting customer-facing technical discussions. Willingness and ability to travel to customer sites in support of technical services, trials, installations, and issue resolution. Preferred Qualifications Experience with the heavy welding industry Experience with laser welding, particularly high-power laser welding or other advanced joining processes. Experience supporting customer applications, application development labs, or technical service organizations. Comfort presenting technical content to customers, industry audiences, and cross-functional teams. Knowledge of metallurgical analysis, weld testing methods, and structured problem-solving approaches for process improvement.
