Job Description

Position OverviewWe are seeking a motivated college summer intern who is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (or related field) to join our Materials Engineering team. The intern will gain hands-on experience performing mechanical and physical testing of metallic and non-metallic materials, supporting engineering design, supply chain management, and production activities. This role offers exposure to laboratory operations, engineering drawing reviews, process optimization, and materials failure analysis in a dynamic environment.

ResponsibilitiesReview and interpret industry specifications and standards (Military and Commercial) to ensure proper application of material requirements.

Monitor, manage, and improve the corrosion control program; expertise in corrosion & coatings preferred.

Support obsolescence substitution, re-certification of production materials, and process improvement activities.

Ensure lab equipment is properly maintained, participate in capital projects for equipment replacement, and arrange for repair and preventative maintenance.

Assist in strategic planning for lab improvements, expansion, and implementation of new capabilities.

Adhere to and support laboratory safety processes, working with health and safety teams to maintain proper safety protocols.

Participate in systematic Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) and other process optimization activities as required.

Participate in engineering drawing reviews and releases, ensuring proper material requirements and callouts for structures, components, and sub-assemblies.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum QualificationsCurrently pursuing a BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering (other degrees considered based on experience).Solid knowledge of materials including metallic, non-metallic, chemicals, testing methods, and material properties.

Working experience in a laboratory environment and operation of lab equipment.

Practical knowledge of
EPA/OSHA/ISO
requirements.

Understanding of basic metallic engineering materials (e.g., titanium, aluminum, steel) and their mechanical/physical properties.

Familiarity with failure analysis, weld joint design, and fractographic examination techniques.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently and interface with engineering groups.

Working understanding of Windows-based PC and associated business software.

Willingness to learn and apply Military and Commercial specifications and standards related to vehicle fabrication.

Ability to climb on/off, work in, and work around military vehicles; must be able to pass ASR test (Anthropometric Size Requirement for confined space).Periodic light lifting (up to 30 lbs).Occasional travel to other facilities, government installations, and subcontractors/vendors may be required.
