The role focuses on understanding the material construct of components used in medical devices and evaluating how these materials interact with biological systems. This position requires a hands-on scientist who can define study plans, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and lead proactive problem-solving initiatives in a highly regulated environment. Responsibilities Conduct hands-on laboratory analysis and testing related to material science for medical device applications. Perform material characterization and evaluation using techniques such as metallography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), microhardness testing, optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Support medical device project teams with diverse materials science requirements, including metals, polymers, and other biomaterials. Collaborate with scientists and cross-functional teams to develop, refine, and define comprehensive test plans. Lead and contribute to proactive problem-solving initiatives related to material performance and biocompatibility. Thrive in a dynamic team environment while demonstrating strong interpersonal and communication skills. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a similar scientific discipline; a Master's degree is also welcome. At least 6 months of hands-on experience performing metallography. A minimum of 2 years of industry experience performing material characterization using techniques such as metallography, SEM, EDS, microhardness testing, optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and FTIR. Experience with material characterization of polymers, metals, and other engineering materials. Proven strong technical writing skills, supported by references. At least 6 months of experience documenting laboratory work in either electronic or paper formats, ideally in a GMP or similarly regulated environment. Ability to interpret complex test data and translate results into clear, well-structured technical reports. Effective communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working within the medical device industry. Knowledge of biomaterials and biocompatibility, including how materials interact with biological systems. Experience working with biomaterials such as nitinol, titanium, carbon, polyurethanes, or stainless steel. Familiarity with material performance in biological environments and its impact on device safety and efficacy. Experience working in highly regulated environments and supporting regulatory submissions. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, growth-oriented organization.
