Full Job Description Scientist:
Materials Synthesis Job Summary Unearthly Materials Inc. is developing next-generation superconducting materials. We are expanding our R D program to translate recent breakthroughs into transformative technologies. We are seeking a Scientist with strong expertise in solid-state materials synthesis and crystal growth to support the development of next-generation superconducting materials. This role focuses on synthesizing and optimizing complex materials systems, including intermetallic, nitrides, hydrides, and other functional compounds, while ensuring high purity, phase control, and compositional homogeneity. The successful candidate will design and execute synthesis protocols, analyze phase formation, and iterate rapidly between synthesis and characterization to refine materials quality. This work involves close collaboration with crystallography, thin-film, theory, and device teams to establish clear structure-property relationships and accelerate materials discovery. Candidates should be comfortable working with a range of characterization techniques, including electron microscopy, diffraction, and spectroscopic methods (e.g., TEM, SEM/EDS, Raman, IR, NMR), to guide synthesis and verify phase purity. Candidates with demonstrated experimental ownership, such as designing synthesis workflows, developing growth protocols, or building experimental setups, are strongly encouraged to apply. Key Responsibilities
  • Design, execute, and optimize synthesis protocols for advanced functional materials, including solid-state reactions, high-pressure synthesis, hydrothermal growth, and inert-atmosphere techniques.
  • Develop strategies to improve phase purity, compositional homogeneity, and structural stability across multiple synthesis routes.
  • Characterize synthesized materials using techniques such as SEM/EDS, Raman, IR, NMR, and other structural or chemical analysis tools to guide synthesis refinement.
  • Interpret experimental data to identify phase formation, defects, and compositional variations, and iterate synthesis parameters accordingly.
  • Collaborate closely with crystallography, thin-film, theory, and device teams to establish structure-property relationships and support materials development pipelines.
  • Troubleshoot synthesis workflows and experimental setups to improve reproducibility, yield, and data quality.
  • Maintain clear experimental records and communicate results through technical reports and internal presentations.
About Unearthly Materials Unearthly Materials, Inc. is an innovative, deep-tech materials company at the frontier of superconducting technology. We have created novel compounds and processes that allow for superconductivity in ambient conditions-a scientific breakthrough poised to revolutionize numerous industries including energy, transportation, medicine, and microelectronics. Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in materials synthesis, including solid-state, high-temperature, high-pressure, or chemical synthesis methods.
  • Hands-on expertise with materials characterization techniques, such as SEM/EDS, Raman, IR, NMR, or related analytical tools.
  • Strong understanding of crystal chemistry, phase diagrams, thermodynamics, and reaction pathways in complex materials systems.
  • Ability to analyze experimental data and iterate synthesis protocols to improve phase purity and reproducibility.
  • Experience troubleshooting synthesis workflows and adapting experimental approaches to solve materials growth challenges. Preferred Experience
  • Experience with rare-earth or reactive metal systems.
  • Familiarity with air-sensitive materials, including glovebox or inert-atmosphere synthesis.
  • Flexibility to work evenings or weekends as needed to meet critical deadlines. Benefits
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Competitive salary (commensurate with experience)
  • Flexible working hours
  • Collaborative, high-impact research environment Equal Opportunities Statement Unearthly Materials is an equal opportunity employer.
