Full Job Description Position Summary:
The Scientific Development Manager sits within the Science & Technology Development function, turning NSL's strategic growth initiatives into operational reality. Working closely with the Director of Science & Technology Development and senior laboratory leaders, this role owns the project management and technical execution of new capability expansions — from commissioning instrumentation to bringing new test service offerings to market. The position is based at NSL's Cleveland, Ohio facility, with regular travel to support NSL's growing laboratory network. The ideal candidate is a selfdirected scientist or engineer with strong laboratory fundamentals, practical project management experience, and the commercial awareness and collaborative mindset needed to deliver new strategic capabilities on time and drive measurable business growth.
Essential Functions:
Laboratory Development (Primary Role) Own end-to-end project management for new test methods and equipment installations — from vendor selection and method development through documentation, validation, audit readiness, and production handoff — in collaboration with laboratory scientists and technicians, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and accreditation (ASTM, Nadcap, and customer-specific requirements) Coordinate with vendors to specify equipment configurations based on applicable specifications, customer requirements, and commercial opportunity Train and mentor laboratory personnel on new equipment, methods, and safety protocols Support technical product roadmaps by providing input on feasibility and timeline estimates Drive process improvements across existing laboratory workflows to increase efficiency, quality, and safety
Secondary Responsibilities:
Commercial Support & Market Development Support creation of technical marketing and go-to market content including white papers, blog posts, webinar materials, and brochure copy Develop market-informed technical perspectives through customer interactions, trade shows, and literature review Serve as a technical liaison to customers, fielding client inquiries and supporting solution development for routine technical questions Represent NSL as an external conference speaker when delegated by the Director Scientific Advancement & Thought Leadership Provide hands-on technical support to laboratory staff for method development challenges and unique customer problems Represent NSL on industry standards committees (such as ASTM) alongside other technical experts Actively monitor industry trends, emerging testing technologies, and competitor capabilities to maintain working knowledge of state-of-the-art materials testing techniques and identify investment and growth opportunities Lead and assist in authoring peer-reviewed articles and conference presentations Incidental Functions Special projects and duties, as assigned by the Director Adheres to all quality management system requirements and safety standards Required Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field 3 - 7 years of hands-on laboratory experience in a materials testing, analytical chemistry, or metallurgical environment Demonstrated technical project management experience Experience working with process and/or material testing specifications (ASTM, ISO, AMS, or equivalent) Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience drafting technical documents, reports, or proposals Preferred Advanced degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline Hands-on experience with a broad range of material and mechanical tests (initial projects include creep testing, elevated temperature tensile testing, shear testing, and corrosion testing) Familiarity with laboratory accreditation standards (e.g., ISO 17025, Nadcap) Demonstrated project management experience related to managing equipment installations or method/process development initiatives Experience in a commercial or industrial laboratory testing environment Track record of scientific publication or conference presentations

General laboratory environment including sitting, standing, and walking; infrequent lifting of up to 20 lbs., pulling, pushing, carrying, reaching, bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, and crouching. Work is completed in a lab environment that may contain toxic materials with possible exposure to odors, acids, fumes, and other reactive materials. Appropriate PPE is provided and required.
