Essential Duties:
Oversee and manage complex materials engineering projects. Identify and complete performance measures, including root cause and post job assessments. Meet project and schedule requirements. Communicate status on a periodic basis to management and design team. Prepare and evaluate material and process instructions, standards, manuals, and specifications. Provide input to the preparations, follow, and reporting of material development programs. Initiate, plan, and perform thorough materials engineering oversight of supplier manufacturing processing and fabrication procedures. Conduct material analyses to determine the physical and mechanical properties of metals. Perform failure analysis on metal components to identify root causes, suggest improvements and develop solutions to prevent future issues. Team with other engineers performing related phases of the technical work to ensure integration of activities and plans. Act as a coach to less experienced employees. Prepare revisions to technical manuals, reports, or procedures in accordance with NR Program quality standards. Conduct production reviews and quality surveillance; review and approve supplier designs and supporting technical reports on assigned components and equipment; develop and implement methods to improve supplier performance. Facilitate design for affordability reviews and prepare cost estimates; perform analyses and evaluations of supplier designs for material suitability, reliability, and integrity. Prepare letters to the Government providing technical information, recommending approval of technical actions, or obtaining approval of funding. Ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. Stay current with advancements in the field of metallurgy and materials science. Understand advanced analytical tools and equipment. B.S. degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering or B.S. degree in another engineering discipline with a M.S. in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering from an accredited college or university. A minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience. Advanced degrees (e.g., Master's, Ph. D.) may be considered as a partial substitute for required experience, depending on the relevance to the position, but may not fulfill the entire experience requirement. Requires a security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.Preferred Job Requirements:
Experience in the application of materials and processes in the design and fabrication of equipment. Ability to prepare and interpret specifications and standards for metallic and nonmetallic materials and processes, and the metallurgy of materials to fabricate plant equipment or pressure vessels is desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and other commonly used business applications and role specific applications. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Able to communicate complex topics clearly across internal and external teams. Able to manage priorities independently and contribute to team objectives with strong attention to detail and deadlines. Committed to maintaining high standards of quality. Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization as well as internal and external customers. Ability to adjust to changing priority and project scopes while ensuring consistent adherence to internal processes and regulatory requirements. Strong desire to learn and adapt to new challenges. Critical thinking skills, creative and innovative, challenges the status quo, willing to push the envelope and think outside the box.
