Job Description
Lead Engineer - Thin Film Coating & MaterialsPosition OverviewWe are seeking a Lead Engineer to drive the development, scale-up, and continuous improvement of thin film coating processes and related materials systems. The role combines hands on technical leadership in thin film deposition and coating technologies with cross disciplinary coordination across materials science, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering. The Lead Engineer will manage projects from concept through production readiness, explore new equipment, push innovation, and coach a team of engineers to deliver high impact results.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead the design, development, and optimization of thin film coating processes (including deposition, curing, and surface treatments) to meet performance and reliability targets.
Oversee scaleup of processes from lab to pilot and production, working closely with manufacturing to ensure transfer and launch readiness.
Coordinate cross functional engineering efforts across materials science, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering to resolve technical challenges.
Develop and execute experiments to characterize materials, coatings, and device performance using relevant analytical tools and metrology.
Implement process control, quality assurance, and test plans to monitor coating uniformity, adhesion, and functional properties.
Manage multiple projects, set priorities, define milestones, and communicate status to stakeholders and senior leadership.
Mentor, train, and provide technical guidance to coating, materials, and mechanical engineers and technicians.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives (root cause analysis, DOE, statistical process control) to improve yield, throughput, and cost.
Prepare and maintain technical documentation, specifications, and compliance records for coatings and materials processes.
Engage with suppliers and customers as needed to qualify materials, equipment, and processes and to support technical inquiries.
QualificationsBachelor's or Masters degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.8+ years of hands on engineering experience with thin film coatings, surface engineering, or related materials technologies; experience as a coating engineer or materials engineer preferred.
Demonstrated experience with coating processes and equipment (e.g., PVD, CVD, spin coating, spray, dip, or related deposition methods).Strong background in materials characterization and metrology (examples: ellipsometry, profilometry, SEM, AFM, XRD, spectroscopy).Practical mechanical engineering skills for equipment, fixturing, and process integration; familiarity with electrical considerations for coating systems is a plus.
Proven project management experience, including planning, risk management, and cross functional coordination.
Experience applying DOE, statistical analysis, and root cause problem solving; Lean or Six Sigma certification is a plus.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to lead and mentor technical teams.
Proficiency with CAD tools, process control systems, and data analysis software.
Ability to work in a dynamic environment, prioritize competing demands, and travel occasionally to supplier or customer sites when required.
