Job Summary The Jig & Fixture Hands-On Designer is responsible for the design, development, modification, and validation of mechanical equipment, tooling, jigs, fixtures, and manufacturing layouts that support high-volume production. This role combines advanced mechanical design expertise with hands-on shop floor involvement to ensure tooling is robust, repeatable, cost-effective, and aligned with production requirements. This position plays a key role in equipment launch, line trials, welding validation, and continuous improvement initiatives focused on cycle time reduction and ROI optimization. Essential Responsibilities Design & Engineering Design, modify, and improve mechanical equipment, tooling, jigs, fixtures, and manufacturing layouts using CAD tools. Develop detailed 2D drawings and 3D models (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Simulation tools, etc.) including GD&T per ASME standards. Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure dimensional accuracy and repeatability. Apply strong mechanical design principles (automotive tooling design experience preferred). Equipment Installation & Launch Support Support installation, commissioning, and validation of assembly and welding equipment. Participate in line trials and launch activities to verify design intent and process capability. Troubleshoot mechanical and process issues during trials and early production. Develop strong hands-on equipment knowledge and apply lessons learned to future designs. Continuous Improvement & Analysis Support Kaizen/Gorika and process improvement initiatives. Conduct cycle time analysis, ROI studies, and time chart development to justify tooling investments. Improve equipment performance, safety, ergonomics, and cost efficiency. Project & Cross-Functional Collaboration Manage workflow, project schedules, milestone tracking, and budget oversight. Collaborate cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, and external vendors. Communicate effectively with U.S.- and Japan-based engineering teams. Maintain accurate documentation, revision control, and engineering change records. Required Qualifications Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field (or equivalent hands-on experience). 3-7+ years of experience designing and building jigs and fixtures in a manufacturing environment. Strong knowledge of engineering principles and mechanical design fundamentals. Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and other engineering software including simulation tools. Strong understanding of GD&T and blueprint interpretation. Practical machining knowledge (mills, lathes, CNC processes) and fabrication methods. Excellent analytical and creative problem-solving abilities. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated project management capability including schedule and budget management. Knowledge of Kaizen/Process principles including cycle time and ROI analysis. Preferred Qualifications Welding experience preferred (weld fixture design and fabrication exposure strongly desired). Automotive tooling design experience preferred. Experience in high-volume industrial manufacturing environments. Exposure to robotic or automated fixture design.
