Job Title:
Senior Mechanical Engineer - Electronics PackagingJob Description This Senior-level Mechanical Engineer role focuses on the mechanical design of controllers and electronics packaging assemblies, with a clear path to grow into a design lead on new product developments. You will own mechanical designs from concept through production release and collaborate closely with a core engineering team to support specification, design, fabrication, validation, and testing. This position is ideal for a hands-on engineer with deep experience in electronics packaging, thermal management, shock and vibration robustness, environmental sealing, EMI-conscious design, and aerospace/defense design standards for ruggedized hardware environments. Responsibilities + Own the mechanical design of controllers and electronics packaging assemblies from initial concept through production release. + Lead mechanical design efforts in SolidWorks, including 3D modeling, detailed drawings, and configuration of complex assemblies. + Collaborate with a core engineering team to define specifications and requirements for new product developments. + Support the full product lifecycle, including design, prototyping, fabrication, validation, and testing of mechanical hardware. + Apply electronics packaging best practices, including thermal management, shock and vibration robustness, environmental sealing, and EMI-conscious design. + Design and validate hardware for aerospace and defense environments in alignment with relevant standards such as MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-5400, and DO-160. + Support and interpret structural and thermal analyses, including basic to moderate FEA and thermal analysis, to ensure robust, reliable designs. + Review and sign off on mechanical drawings, ensuring proper application of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and compliance with internal standards. + Coordinate closely with electrical, manufacturing, and test teams to integrate mechanical designs with PCBs, power electronics, and high-voltage systems. + Support PCB design and assembly considerations as they relate to mechanical packaging and integration. + Engage in EMI testing support and design improvements to meet electromagnetic compatibility requirements. + Participate in new product development activities, including design reviews, trade studies, and engineering decision-making. + Troubleshoot mechanical issues on prototypes and production hardware, working hands-on with shop floor and test personnel. + Contribute to continuous improvement of design practices, standards, and processes for ruggedized electronics packaging. + Provide technical guidance and gradually assume design lead responsibilities on complex projects and high-speed systems. Essential Skills + Bachelor's degree (BS) in Mechanical Engineering. + 7+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience. + Strong, demonstrated experience with electronics packaging for controllers and power electronics. + Proficiency in mechanical design using SolidWorks, including complex assemblies and detailed drawings. + Experience with thermal management for electronics, including heat dissipation and cooling strategies. + Background in designing for shock and vibration robustness in ruggedized environments. + Experience with environmental sealing for electronics, including protection against harsh operating conditions. + Proven capability in EMI-conscious packaging design and support for EMI testing. + Experience designing for aerospace and/or defense environments. + Familiarity with aerospace/defense standards such as MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-5400, and DO-160. + Strong knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) per
ASME Y14.5.
+ Ability to support structural analysis and FEA at a basic to moderate level. + Ability to support thermal analysis for electronics packaging. + Hands-on approach to mechanical engineering, including prototyping, troubleshooting, and validation. + Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with cross-functional teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience with mechanical design of high-speed systems and advanced aerospace/defense technologies. + Familiarity with
IPC/WHMA-A-620
standards for cable and harness assemblies. + Experience with PCB design and PCB assembly considerations from a mechanical perspective. + Exposure to high-voltage electrical and high-voltage power systems and their mechanical packaging needs. + Background working in aerospace/defense ruggedized hardware environments. + Experience with EMI testing and implementing design changes to improve electromagnetic compatibility. + Prior involvement in full lifecycle new product development, from concept through production. + Demonstrated ability to make sound engineering tradeoff decisions in performance-driven products. + Interest in or experience with magnetic bearing systems, power electronics, and high-speed rotating machinery. + Desire to grow into a design lead or technical leadership role within a highly technical engineering organization. Work Environment The role is based within an advanced technology organization specializing in high-speed rotating machinery, magnetic bearing systems, and power electronics for aerospace, defense, and industrial applications. Mechanical engineers work closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical, manufacturing, and test, in a highly technical, hands-on engineering environment. The team operates in a fast-paced, project-based setting where engineers regularly move between design activities and the shop floor to support prototyping, troubleshooting, and validation. You can expect full design ownership from concept through production, exposure to complex electronics packaging challenges, and a clear path toward design lead and technical leadership responsibilities. The culture emphasizes practical engineering, collaboration, and problem-solving in support of complex, performance-driven products, with frequent interaction across disciplines and direct engagement with hardware.
