Job Description

This position will be the test engineering lead overseeing operations for Astrobotic's engine test stand and VTVL flight vehicles. Applicants should have a background in propulsion and flight test, with good technical understanding of launch vehicle subsystems and operations. Experience with cryo propulsions systems is also required. This role will be responsible for ensuring test readiness and safe execution of critical test operations.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Serve as Test/Launch Conductor and other test support roles for flight test and test stand operations. Oversee development of test procedures and ground support equipment for testing operations Set standards for test planning and documentation and ensure those standards are met. Participate in test planning, Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs), test execution, technical troubleshooting, and post-test data reviews. Develop training program for testing ops and verify team has met training requirements. Actively manage the test operations schedule and resource planning Manage maintenance and repair of test site infrastructure, including test stand hardware and associated facilities. Ensure safe operations for both ground and flight testing. Provide engineering and management expertise in the area of design, development, integration and test, and operations of launch vehicles and propulsion systems. Collaborate with the systems engineering, test team responsible engineers, and program leadership to define requirements and implement test activities. Support project management by providing task lists and task dependencies, estimating labor and material cost requirements.
Required Skills/Experience:
Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or equivalent engineering degree. 8+ years of professional experience working with rocket and propulsion development, test, and flight operations. Previous test experience (vehicle testing, ground testing, and/or flight testing) Willingness to take on responsibility for team and vehicle safety in high-risk, hazardous launch operations. Experience safely testing with and handling hazardous materials (cryogens, hypergols, high pressure gas). Hands-on project experience with fluid and mechanical systems, preferably as a team or sub-team lead. Awareness of regulatory safety requirements (e.g., OSHA, FAA) Development of subsystem requirements from system requirements Openness to learning and mentoring on Astrobotic design and test philosophies from existing team. Effective people and process management skills, particularly an ability to read and understand team members well-being in a high-pressure test environment Ability to earn and maintain trust from flight operations and test teams
Desired Skills/Experience:
5+ years of professional experience managing flight / launch test operations Familiarity with explosive hazard calculations. Experience using CAD to design parts/assemblies (Solidworks preferred). Experience developing hardware from concept to working prototypes. Hands-on fabrication skills. Experience as technical lead for launch vehicle, rocket subsystem, and / or experimental aircraft.
