U.S. Citizens and U.S. Permanent Residents only Position Summary Class A Surfacing is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the development of advanced electromechanical hardware for aerospace and defense applications. This role requires a hands-on engineer with experience taking products through the full lifecycle, from requirements definition and concept development through qualification testing and production support. The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical design expertise with the ability to work closely with multidisciplinary teams, suppliers, manufacturing organizations, and test engineers to deliver high-reliability hardware in demanding environments. Key Responsibilities Translate system-level requirements into detailed mechanical and electromechanical design requirements. Design and develop precision mechanical assemblies, actuators, and motion control mechanisms. Create and optimize designs involving gears, bearings, lead screws, shafts, brakes, encoders, and related components. Develop ruggedized hardware and enclosures capable of operating in challenging aerospace and defense environments. Perform mechanical analyses including structural sizing, fatigue evaluation, tolerance stack-up, and lifecycle assessments. Generate detailed engineering drawings and documentation in accordance with
ASME Y14.5 GD&T
standards. Support hardware integration, assembly, troubleshooting, and validation activities. Develop qualification plans, test procedures, and supporting test equipment. Coordinate environmental qualification efforts to demonstrate compliance with aerospace and military standards. Work directly with suppliers and manufacturing partners to resolve technical issues and improve producibility. Support engineering investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective actions throughout the product lifecycle. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical discipline. Minimum 5 years of experience developing mechanical or electromechanical products from concept through production. Strong experience designing precision mechanical systems and assemblies. Knowledge of electromagnetic actuator systems and motion control hardware. Experience performing strength, fatigue, and lifecycle analyses for mechanical components. Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software. Strong understanding of GD&T and engineering drawing creation. Experience supporting hardware qualification and environmental testing programs. Ability to work effectively in laboratory, manufacturing, and test environments. Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience with DO-160 and/or
MIL-STD-810
qualification programs. Experience designing qualification fixtures, test equipment, and validation systems. Knowledge of gearbox design, AGMA standards, lubrication systems, and power transmission components. Experience supporting aerospace, defense, space, or high-performance industrial products. Familiarity with both rapid development environments and highly regulated engineering programs. Additional Information Position is based in Torrance, California. Relocation assistance may be available. Aerospace and defense industry experience is highly desirable. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Pay:
$160,000.00 - $200,000.00 per year
