Job Description
At ASSA ABLOY, our mission is to make securely accessing the things in your life noticeably easier, without being noticeable. Our global teams work together to create products and services that add everyday simplicity and convenience to our users' lives. With the ability to control access to what they love the most, we're able to provide peace of mind through safety and visibility. The Electrical Component Engineer is responsible for the selection, qualification, and lifecycle management of electronic and electromechanical components used in access control products. This role partners with design engineering, purchasing, quality, manufacturing, and suppliers to ensure components meet technical requirements, are available at the right cost and lead time, and comply with applicable regulatory and environmental standards. This role involves partnering with hardware design teams to define component requirements, evaluating and approving parts (including alternates), maintaining approved vendor/parts data in PLM/ERP systems, and supporting qualification and validation activities. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, communicates effectively across functions, and has a strong background in PCB manufacture, component parameters, supplier engagement, and risk management (EOL/PCN/supply constraints). This position will be located on-site at our New Haven Connecticut reporting to the Hardware Electrical Engineering Manager. What will you be doing The component engineer is a specialized technical professional responsible for the selection, qualification, and lifecycle management of the electronic and electromechanical parts used in complex product designs. This role bridges design engineering, procurement, quality, and manufacturing to ensure components meet technical requirements, are available and cost-effective, and comply with applicable standards and regulations. Technical leadership Drive component selection and qualification decisions by applying requirements, datasheets, and application/derating analysis; align choices to performance, reliability, cost, and availability targets.
Own preferred-part guidance and approval criteria; lead reviews for new parts, alternates, and deviations and provide clear disposition supported by data (supplier info, test results, field feedback). Cross-functional collaboration Partner with Engineering, Purchasing, Quality, and Manufacturing to resolve component issues (quality, lead time, cost) and ensure selections support manufacturability and production ramp needs.
Engage suppliers and internal stakeholders to clarify specifications, evaluate alternates/form-fit-function equivalents, and communicate impacts of PCNs, shortages, and lifecycle changes. Project management and execution Execute component engineering deliverables on schedule (new part setup/approval, AVL updates, alternates, PCN dispositions, and EOL actions) to support development milestones and uninterrupted production.
Maintain visibility to component risks (single-source, long lead, allocation, compliance, counterfeit) and drive mitigation plans (approved alternates, last-time buys, redesign recommendations) with documented rationale. Component verification and validation Define the right level of component evaluation/qualification (bench checks, environmental, reliability) based on application risk, coordinate execution and capture evidence for approvals.
- Troubleshoot component-related failures and drive re-qualification when changes occur (PCN/ECO, supplier process changes); ensure outcomes are communicated and documented.
- Maintain accurate component records in PLM/ERP (approved manufacturers, attributes, alternates) and ensure BOM/AVL changes are processed through the appropriate change-control path (ECR/ECO).
- Maintain compliance evidence (RoHS/REACH/conflict minerals) via supplier declarations and controlled documentation; ensure impacted parts/changes are reviewed and dispositioned for audit readiness. Knowledge sharing and professional growth
- Share preferred-part guidance and component processes with project teams; help drive consistent application of standards across programs.
- Stay current on component technologies, supplier roadmaps, compliance expectations, and counterfeit avoidance practices to improve decision quality and responsiveness.
