Job Description
Job Title:
Mechanical Engineer Job Description This role is a hands-on Mechanical Engineer position focused on designing and developing mechanical components and assemblies for motors and related electromechanical systems. The engineer owns the full lifecycle of mechanical design, from initial modeling and stress analysis through material and finish selection, tolerance development, reliability work, qualification support, and sustaining engineering. The position is ideal for someone with strong mechanical design fundamentals, experience in rotating or electromechanical products, and a proven ability to work in high-reliability environments while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams. Responsibilities + Design and model mechanical components and assemblies for motors, actuators, geartrains, housings, shafts, interfaces, and related electromechanical hardware. + Create and maintain 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, tolerance schemes, specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), and complete drawing packages. + Perform material selection and finish selection to support robust, manufacturable mechanical designs. + Conduct structural stress analysis and tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure performance, reliability, and manufacturability. + Select mechanical components for reliability, integration, and ease of manufacturing and assembly. + Support the design of motor mechanical systems with a strong emphasis on durability, manufacturability, assembly, reliability, and system integration. + Contribute to the design of geartrains, shafting, bearing systems, housings, interfaces, sealing approaches, and associated hardware. + Participate in lubrication selection, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), mean time between failures (MTBF) and reliability analyses, and design improvement initiatives. + Participate in prototype builds and provide hands-on support during assembly and test activities. + Support qualification testing and environmental testing to validate design performance under demanding operating conditions. + Assist in root-cause investigations to identify and resolve technical issues and drive corrective actions. + Coordinate directly with customers, manufacturing, quality, test, and other engineering teams to resolve technical issues and advance design maturity. + Support pilot builds and transition products from development into production, including sustaining engineering and product improvement efforts. + Collaborate with electrical engineers to integrate motors, sensors, feedback devices, drives, and packaging requirements into complete electromechanical assemblies. + Help develop robust, high-reliability mechanical solutions for aerospace, defense, and industrial applications. Essential Skills + Demonstrated experience in rotating equipment design and electromechanics. + Strong mechanical design skills for motors, actuators, and related electromechanical systems. + Hands-on experience with stress analysis and structural analysis of mechanical components. + Proficiency in material selection and finish selection for mechanical and electromechanical hardware. + Experience performing tolerance stack-up analysis and developing detailed tolerance schemes. + Ability to design for durability, manufacturability, assembly, and reliability in high-reliability environments. + Experience with geartrain design, shafting, bearing systems, housings, interfaces, and sealing approaches. + Familiarity with lubrication selection and reliability engineering methods such as FMEA and MTBF analyses. + Experience supporting prototype builds, qualification testing, and environmental testing. + Ability to participate in and support root-cause investigations and design improvement efforts. + Proficiency with 3D CAD tools such as Autodesk for modeling and detailing mechanical components and assemblies. + Experience using analysis tools such as Nastran or similar for structural stress analysis. + Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with customers, manufacturing, quality, test, and cross-functional engineering teams. + Ability to integrate mechanical designs with electrical components such as motors, sensors, feedback devices, and drives. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience developing mechanical solutions for aerospace, defense, or industrial applications. + Experience in high-reliability product development environments. + Familiarity with structured reliability and design improvement methodologies. + Experience with electromechanical packaging and integration of multi-disciplinary systems. Work Environment The role operates in a collaborative team environment with significant involvement in defense-related projects and high-reliability applications. The engineer works closely with cross-functional teams in engineering, manufacturing, quality, test, and customer-facing functions to bring complex electromechanical products from concept through production and sustaining phases. The work involves regular use of 3D CAD tools such as Autodesk, structural analysis tools such as Nastran, and participation in prototype builds, qualification testing, and environmental testing in a lab or test facility setting.
