Boston, MA Duties:
Lead the design, qualification, and lifecycle sustainment of lithium-ion battery systems that power WHOOP's advanced wearable technology. This role is critical to achieving the highest levels of energy density, reliability, and safety in compact, high-performance form factors. Serve as the technical lead for WHOOP's battery systems, driving development across internal engineering teams and external partners. Drive innovation in cell design and integration to support long-lasting, compact energy systems that meet WHOOP's demanding performance standards. Own the batteries subsystem and ensure optimal reliability and safety under real- world use conditions. Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, firmware, reliability, and quality engineers to optimize battery system performance in a multidisciplinary development environment. Lead the creation and execution of test plans, including Design of Experiments (DOE), performance validation, and root cause failure analysis for battery-related issues. Evaluate and qualify battery suppliers and manufacturing partners, ensuring alignment with WHOOP's product standards and regulatory requirements. Maintain organized documentation for test results, field performance data, and compliance with international safety and regulatory standards (UL, CE, IEC). Ensure WHOOP's battery systems meet or exceed global safety and certification benchmarks, supporting regulatory filings as needed. Conduct field quality assessments and lead corrective actions for battery-related concerns. Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical roadmaps for future product innovation. Manage battery subsystem development timelines and cross-functional team coordination to ensure on-time delivery of new and sustained battery technologies. Work with firmware and Electrical engineers to develop and optimize the fuel gauge and battery management system for the WHOOP line of products.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or related technical field (or foreign degree equivalent) and 5 years of experience with battery system design, failure analysis, or sustaining engineering. Will also accept a Master's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or related technical field (or foreign degree equivalent) and 2 years of experience with battery system design, failure analysis, or sustaining engineering.
Required Skills:
At least 2 years of experience with Lithium-Ion Cell design and battery chemistry; At least 2 years of experience leading cross-functional engineering projects and communicating complex technical issues to diverse stakeholders; At least 2 years of experience using Python or similar scripting tools for test data analysis and visualization; At least 2 years of experience with machine learning methods and data science tools for battery predictive modeling; At least 2 years of experience with running battery test equipment (Arbin or Maccor) and battery test fixture/DOE development.
Salary:
$146,786/year - $185,000/year
