Job Description

POSITION
Senior Inspector - Incoming Quality Control (IQC)
REPORTING TO
Senior Director, Platform Engineering
LOCATION
Westborough
GENERAL FUNCTION
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, development, analysis, and production support of mechanical and electromechanical assemblies used in Kopin's microdisplay-based products. This includes compact display modules, optical engine assemblies, head-mounted displays, weapon sights, medical viewers, FPV goggles, and other ruggedized near-eye display systems. This role requires strong mechanical design capability, hands-on product development experience, and the ability to work across optical, electrical, embedded software, manufacturing, and systems engineering disciplines. The Senior Mechanical Engineer leads mechanical design activities from concept through prototype, qualification, and production transition, ensuring that designs meet performance, SWaP, manufacturability, reliability, and cost requirements. The Senior Mechanical Engineer is expected to operate with substantial independence, provide technical guidance to junior engineers, and contribute to system-level trade studies involving packaging, thermal performance, structural integrity, ergonomics, environmental robustness, and manufacturability.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the mechanical design and development of microdisplay-based products and assemblies from concept through production release. Design compact mechanical and electromechanical assemblies for optical engines, display modules, HMDs, weapon sights, medical viewers, and related embedded display systems. Develop 3D CAD models, detailed 2D drawings, tolerance stack-ups, and production documentation in accordance with company standards. Apply GD&T, tolerance analysis, material selection, and DFM/DFA principles to ensure robust, manufacturable, and cost-effective designs. Perform mechanical analysis including structural, thermal, vibration, shock, and tolerance analysis to validate product performance and guide design decisions. Support opto-mechanical design activities involving precision alignment, optical mounting, display positioning, thermal control, sealing, and mechanical stability. Develop mechanical concepts that balance SWaP, ergonomics, environmental requirements, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost. Design and support mechanical fixtures, tooling, alignment aids, and test equipment used for prototype builds, production, verification, and qualification testing. Support prototype builds, design verification, environmental testing, and root-cause analysis of mechanical and system-level issues. Work closely with electrical, optical, systems, manufacturing, and quality engineering teams to support product development. Support design reviews, risk assessments, FMEAs, and corrective action activities. Create and maintain engineering documentation including drawings, BoMs, ECOs, design reports, test plans, and verification records. Interface with suppliers, machine shops, contract manufacturers, and external design partners to support fabrication, assembly, and production transition. Support manufacturing and production teams with technical guidance, process improvements, fixture development, yield improvement, and troubleshooting. Mentor junior mechanical engineers and provide technical guidance on design methods, documentation, analysis, and product development best practices.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
REQUIRED:
Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident. As a defense contractor Kopin is subject to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and you must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident (green card holder) to be considered for this position. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline. 8+ years of mechanical engineering experience in product development, electromechanical systems, opto-mechanical systems, ruggedized hardware, or precision mechanical assemblies. Strong proficiency with 3D CAD and 2D drawing creation; SolidWorks or Creo preferred. Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFM/DFA, material selection, and mechanical documentation practices. Experience designing machined, sheet metal, molded, printed, or precision mechanical components. Experience performing or interpreting mechanical analysis such as FEA, thermal analysis, vibration/shock analysis, or tolerance stack-up analysis. Hands-on experience supporting prototype builds, hardware debug, test fixtures, and production transition. Ability to independently own mechanical design tasks from concept through prototype validation and production release. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively in cross-functional engineering teams. Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to participate in technical design reviews.
PREFERRED JOB REQUIREMENTS
Experience with compact opto-mechanical assemblies, near-eye displays, HMDs, optical modules, imaging systems, cameras, sensors, or display-based products. Experience with environmental requirements including shock, vibration, thermal cycling, humidity, sealing, ingress protection, and rugged packaging. Experience with thermal management of compact electronic or optical assemblies. Experience with cleanroom-compatible designs, optical handling, adhesive bonding, precision alignment, or microdisplay packaging. Experience with rapid prototyping, CNC machining, SLA/SLS/FDM printing, urethane casting, and prototype fabrication methods. Experience designing fixtures and tooling for assembly, alignment, test, environmental testing, or production support. Experience with PLM systems, revision control, ECO processes, and formal product release documentation. Familiarity with basic MIL-STD environmental requirements, IPC/WHMA harness standards, or medical device design controls. Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading mechanical design efforts on cross-functional product development programs.
