Stucky-Vitale Architects (SVA) is a full-service architectural firm based in Royal Oak, Michigan, with over 60 years of service to the Detroit metropolitan region and beyond. SVA specializes in healthcare, institutional, and commercial architecture and interior design, offering clients an unusual breadth of capability for a firm of its size — including NCARB multi-state professionals and project delivery, integrated interior design, and a nationwide healthcare design portfolio.
ROLE SUMMARY
The Mechanical Engineer will help grow the firm's internal engineering capability, along with collaborating with external consultants, where applicable. This individual is a licensed Professional Engineer who will design and produce stamped mechanical and plumbing construction documents, coordinate mechanical scope within SVA's BIM environment, and collaborate closely with the architectural and electrical teams from early design through construction administration. The Mechanical Engineer works in tandem with SVA's Electrical Engineer to provide complete in-house building systems coverage. Healthcare project experience is a plus; a willingness to develop that expertise within SVA's practice is expected. This is a high-visibility, foundational role at a firm that is actively building its engineering capability that allows the right candidate to help shape what that practice becomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Design and produce stamped mechanical and plumbing construction documents on assigned SVA projects across all project phases Perform HVAC system design including heating, cooling, ventilation, and air distribution; perform load calculations and size and specify equipment and distribution systems appropriate to project type and occupancy Design plumbing systems including domestic hot and cold water, sanitary, storm drainage, and natural gas; coordinate medical gas systems on applicable healthcare projects with licensed medical gas contractors Coordinate mechanical and plumbing scope within the project BIM model; participate in multi-discipline coordination meetings and resolve conflicts with architectural, electrical, structural, and civil teams Coordinate with the Electrical Engineer on mechanical equipment power requirements, controls integration, and building automation system (BAS) interfaces Prepare mechanical and plumbing specifications across applicable MasterFormat divisions; review shop drawings and submittals during construction administration Conduct site visits during construction to observe mechanical and plumbing installations, respond to RFIs, and confirm conformance with construction documents Support business development by contributing to proposals and client presentations where in-house engineering capability is a differentiator Establish mechanical and plumbing standards, typical details, and specifications libraries for the firm as the engineering practice is built out
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent required; Master's degree preferred Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) required — Michigan registration or confirmed reciprocity eligibility at time of hire; mechanical PE license required 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience with demonstrated expertise in HVAC and plumbing systems design Experience producing construction documents in Revit and AutoCAD Familiarity with applicable codes and standards, including applicable energy codes Healthcare, institutional, or commercial project experience preferred; healthcare mechanical experience (including pressurization relationships, medical gas coordination, and infection control ventilation) is a meaningful plus Ability to work independently as the sole in-house mechanical engineer while collaborating effectively within a multi-discipline team Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable in client and contractor-facing settings
