Senior Mechanical Engineer Sterling Heights, MI 48310 Full-time Full-time Job Overview SERAPID specializes in custom machine design and manufacturing. We focus on linear motion for many industries including Theatre, Nuclear, Military and Quick Die Change. We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is a full-time position that reports to the Engineering Manager and serves as a technical authority for complex execution phase engineering work, including major engineering packages, full mechanical scope, system level design decisions, technical risk management, design reviews, and mentorship of the engineering team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a technical authority for complex custom mechanical designs incorporating Serapid technologies.
  • Lead major engineering packages or full mechanical scope during detailed engineering and execution phase design.
  • Own system level design decisions during detailed engineering while aligning project, cost, schedule, and commercial impacts with Engineering Management and cross functional leadership.
  • Develop, review, and approve complex 3D models, approval drawings, manufacturing drawings, detail drawings, assemblies, BOMs, and related engineering documentation within assigned scope.
  • Perform or review advanced engineering calculations such as motor horsepower, stress and deflection, torque, load analysis, structural evaluations, mechanical tradeoff studies, and related analyses.
  • Lead technical reviews, drawing reviews, calculation reviews, risk reviews, and design problem solving activities.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through technical coaching, design review feedback, problem solving support, and knowledge sharing.
  • Interface directly with customers on execution phase technical matters as assigned.
  • Support layout, concept, proposal, and architecture discussions when execution phase expertise is needed.
  • Coordinate with suppliers to resolve complex technical component selection, application, specification, or integration issues.
  • Support operation and maintenance manual content, technical documentation, and customer deliverables for complex systems.
  • Manage technical risk by identifying ambiguity, incomplete requirements, integration concerns, manufacturability issues, and critical design assumptions early.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis support for issues found during design, manufacturing, assembly, testing, installation, or field operation.
  • Analyze and interpret test information, field feedback, quality issues, or nonconformances to resolve design related problems and prevent recurrence.
  • Guide engineering standards, design practices, lessons learned, calculation methods, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Quality, Project Management, Sales, and other departments to support successful execution of complex projects.
  • Act as a role model for technical judgment, accountability, professionalism, communication, and cross functional teamwork.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of fabrication, machining, assembly, and other manufacturing processes.
  • Advanced knowledge of standard mechanical engineering industry practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of motion systems, custom equipment, special machines, automation, industrial equipment, and related mechanical systems.
  • Highly proficient in performing and reviewing engineering calculations such as motor horsepower, stress and deflection of steel, torque analysis of shafts, load analysis, and related mechanical calculations.
  • Strong problem definition, technical analysis, risk evaluation, and solution development capability.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions with limited management intervention within assigned engineering scope.
  • Ability to lead technical reviews and communicate complex engineering concepts to employees with varying levels of experience.
  • Strong leadership and mentorship skills, with the ability to guide junior and mid-level engineers and foster technical development.
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with internal teams, customers, suppliers, and cross functional stakeholders.
  • Familiar with ERP software and engineering file management systems.
  • Highly proficient in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar design software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Strong planning and time management skills, with the ability to organize, set priorities, and manage multiple complex work packages simultaneously.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Professionalism and integrity, with a strong work ethic, accountability, and ethical decision making.
Education and Experience:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of relevant mechanical design experience, or equivalent demonstrated technical capability.
  • Extensive 3D design experience required.
  • Experience with SolidWorks Parametric Modeling required.
  • Experience with SimSolid, FEA analysis, or other engineering analysis tools preferred.
  • Experience with the design of motion systems, special machines, automation, custom equipment, or industrial equipment required.
  • Experience mentoring engineers, leading technical reviews, or leading complex engineering scope preferred.

        Travel:
        • Occasional travel to customers, suppliers, or project sites may be required.
        Supervisory Responsibilities:
        • Currently, this role does not include direct supervisory duties.
        However, this role is expected to provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior and mid-level engineers and may evolve into a lead or managerial role in the future.
