Clayton, MO Job Details Full-time 1 day ago Qualifications Decision making Mechanical knowledge Full Job Description The Lead Mechanical Engineer is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the mechanical engineering function for one or more processing areas within mining and minerals processing operations, with a focus on cobalt, nickel and lithium processing and production. This position requires a strategic and experienced engineering leader with 7-10 years of experience and a proven track record in team management, project execution, and technical problem-solving. The Lead Mechanical Engineer will drive engineering strategy, optimize resource allocation, and ensure successful delivery of complex projects while leading and developing a high-performing engineering team. Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field from an accredited program (Master's degree preferred). 7-10 years of progressive engineering experience in mining, mineral processing, power generation, or heavy industrial environments. Minimum of 3 years of engineering management or project leadership experience. Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain within one year; PMP certification is a plus. Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including material handling, fluid systems, rotating equipment, and processing infrastructure. Proven experience managing complex projects, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, and execution. Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and develop new or improved engineering methods and processes. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with clients, stakeholders, and team members. Excellent analytical, organizational, and decision-making abilities. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Proficiency with engineering tools, software, and IT systems to enhance productivity and workflow efficiency Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage the mechanical engineering department supporting one to two key processing areas within mining and minerals production operations. Establish engineering priorities, project strategies, and execution plans aligned with organizational goals. Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate engineering work requiring independent judgment in evaluating, selecting, and adapting standard engineering techniques and procedures. Oversee multiple concurrent projects, including scope development, site investigation, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management. Allocate engineering resources across projects to optimize team efficiency and performance. Provide high-level technical oversight and ensure quality, consistency, and compliance of all engineering deliverables. Lead design efforts and coordinate multidisciplinary teams through all project phases, including concept, design, and construction. Serve as the primary technical decision-maker, solving complex engineering challenges and developing innovative solutions. Coordinate with clients, external stakeholders, and internal departments; lead meetings, progress reporting, and communications. Oversee design activities, including review of calculations, drawings, and specifications, and ensure alignment with project requirements. Support construction and commissioning phases by coordinating with site teams, responding to RFIs, and resolving field issues. Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, reliability, throughput, and cost optimization. Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers and interns; conduct performance evaluations and support career development. Coordinate with Department Managers to assign project teams and manage workloads effectively. Support capital planning efforts, including feasibility studies, cost estimating, and long-term infrastructure planning. Perform other duties as assigned. Work Environment & Conditions:
Primarily office-based in St. Louis, MO, with frequent travel to the Fredericktown, MO processing facility and mine. Regular exposure to industrial and mining environments requiring the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
