Job Description

Job Overview Plan and coordinate high temperature furnace tests on crystal growth materials to support silicon crystal growth process development goals, and lead materials / device failure analysis activity in support of internal and external customers Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive failure analysis on materials and components using laboratory techniques and advanced testing methods. Work with existing and new crucible and hot zone vendors to ensure products meet internal specifications through in-house or outsourced testing. Communicate results to align vendors with existing and future requirements. Advise internal MFG and RD Crystal groups to support ongoing crystal growth improvement projects and support post growth failure analysis. Advise R&D, manufacturing sites, field engineers, and external customers worldwide on material and device failure analysis approaches, provide characterization support, coordinate multiple tasks, and adjust analysis priorities as needed. Timely communication of analysis results, conclusions, and recommendations to internal and external customers. Develop/evaluate techniques and make purchase recommendations for failure analysis methods/equipment and high temperature furnace operations. Work with tool vendors and outside lab characterization vendors as needed. Train and supervise lab technician(s) as needed. Provide regular performance feedback and annual performance reviews. Cooperate with other intra-company characterization labs. Coordinate characterization support from outside the company as needed. Maintain safe working environment Qualifications BS Materials Science, Physics, or Electrical Engineering plus 10 years of semiconductor industry experience Background / familiarity with semiconductor material properties, materials processing, materials characterization and semiconductor device processing. Background/familiarity with silicon Cz crystal growth, crucible related quartz materials and high temperature interactions between silicon and hot zone/crucible components to support crystal productivity. Existing knowledge and application of optical microscopy, electron microscopy, x-ray analysis, and other techniques such as AFM, SIMS, SRP, Recombination Lifetime, Chemical Etching, FTIR, SE, etc.. Strong hands-on analytical skills and approach to materials analysis. Key areas of emphasis shall be determining/connecting a problem statement with a supporting analysis plan and executing hands-on work to determine failure root causes. Must develop ability to translate analysis results into a report with conclusions and suggested next steps, and present report to internal and external customers. Willing to be trained in Failure Analysis and crystal furnace testing by existing staff using a combination of existing analysis topics and reports, and hands-on work. Further training will include silicon manufacturing process flow and steps, typical semiconductor device process flow and steps and furnace applications for quartz ware evaluation.
