Job Description
Job Description The Mechanical Designer will have 5-10 years of experience as a P&ID Developer and will be responsible for creating, updating, validating, and maintaining Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) that illustrate the flow of fluids, control systems, and equipment in industrial processes. In addition to traditional P&ID development, this role will support a high‑visibility Data Remediation and Governance initiative within a brand‑new group . The position focuses on cleaning and validating asset information, supporting new technology development, and ensuring accurate data integration into emerging AI tools. This is not a design‑only position — it combines drafting expertise with field verification, asset identification, and data governance duties to support maintenance, operations, and engineering teams. Responsibilities P&ID Development Create and update P&IDs using industry-standard software (AutoCAD) to accurately represent piping, equipment, instrumentation, and control loops. Collaborate with mechanical and process engineers to ensure P&IDs meet project specifications and operational requirements. Generate detailed P&ID documentation, including equipment symbols, instrument tags, piping layouts, and asset naming/numbering. Ensure all P&IDs comply with safety regulations, industry codes, and internal standards. Manage and track P&ID revisions, communicating updates to all project stakeholders. Conduct field walkdowns to produce accurate as‑built P&IDs and validate system configurations. Data Remediation & Governance (High‑Visibility Project) Perform on‑site data remediation at power generation facilities, reviewing and validating existing equipment, piping, and instrumentation data. Conduct asset identification and tagging verification to ensure alignment with engineering documentation and operational standards. Match field‑verified data with information input into a newly developed AI-driven data management tool . Review, correct, and cleanse equipment data to support long‑term digital transformation and reliability initiatives. Utilize equipment records scanned into a new mobile/desktop application (in development) to ensure technicians can access correct engineering drawings, inventory levels, and maintenance‑relevant information. Work directly with a newly established, high‑visibility Southern Company Services group focused on technology adoption and data quality improvement. Support the integration of modern tools and technologies that enhance maintenance workflows and data reliability. Collaboration & Support Clearly communicate design concepts, field findings, and data corrections to engineers, project managers, and maintenance teams. Provide guidance and support to junior designers and drafters in P&ID creation and data governance processes. Work cross-functionally to identify gaps in data, documentation, and asset integrity. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or related field. 5-10 years of experience in mechanical design with a focus on P&ID development. Proficiency in AutoCAD for P&ID creation. Strong understanding of industrial processes, piping systems, equipment, and instrumentation. Knowledge of safety regulations and industry standards related to P&IDs. High attention to detail and accuracy, especially in field data verification. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaborative abilities. Additional Skills & Qualifications Mechanical design experience in industrial, utility, or power environments. Knowledge of piping design, instrumentation, and process flow. Understanding of fluid mechanics and engineering documentation. Experience with asset tagging, field verification, or data governance is a plus. Familiarity with digital tools, mobile applications, or AI-driven data systems preferred. Work Environment This position is onsite at a power plant in Gulfport, MS . The work involves coordination with engineering and maintenance teams and includes field time walking down equipment, verifying asset information, and ensuring strict adherence to safety regulations.
