Job Description

High Altitude Systems Engineer - Pneumatics & Thermal Systems Stratospheres Inc. Hoboken, NJ Job Details Full-time 1 day ago Qualifications Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering Teamwork System design Systems engineering Mechanical troubleshooting Full Job Description About the Company Stratospheres Inc. is a mission-driven startup focused on developing low-cost, scalable technology to study weather and climate. We launch stratospheric balloons, track and control their movement, and keep them at fixed positions for long duration to collect continuous atmospheric data. We also build physics-based models to simulate and understand weather and climate conditions. About the Role We are developing a high altitude balloon altitude-control system for long-duration stratospheric flight. This role focuses on designing and testing lightweight air/gas pumping systems capable of operating at 20-30 km altitude under extreme low-pressure (~10-50 mbar, ~1-5% sea-level pressure) and low-temperature (down to approximately -70°C) conditions. The position is highly hands-on and involves rapid prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, and system integration. Experience with Google Loon, Raven Aerostar, HAPS, HAB, UAV, robotics, or similar autonomous aerospace systems is a strong plus. A cover letter describing your relevant hands-on project experience is required. Applications without a cover letter will not be considered.
Key Responsibilities Pneumatic System Design:
Design, prototype, and iterate lightweight air/gas pumping systems for high altitude operation under near-vacuum and extreme thermal conditions.
Mechanical Integration:
Work with: pumps valves tubing pressure vessels motors sensors batteries thermal and structural components
Controls Collaboration:
Work closely with embedded and electronics engineers to support integration of: motor controllers pressure sensors telemetry systems autonomous control systems
Environmental Validation:
Perform thermal, vacuum, and field testing to validate system performance and survivability in extreme high-altitude environments.
Rapid Prototyping & Troubleshooting:
Diagnose and solve real-world pneumatic, thermal, airflow, sealing, power, and mechanical reliability problems under aggressive development timelines. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time.
