Staff Mechanical Design Engineer, Battery Pack, Semi 3.3 3.3 out of 5 stars Sparks, NV 89437 Full-time Tesla 8,354 reviews Full-time What to Expect Tesla's Semi Battery Design Engineering team is looking for a skilled and motivated Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to drive our battery development efforts in Reno, NV. In this role, you would be responsible for leading a small team of design engineers to implement ongoing improvements to the Semi battery pack, as well as designing improved future versions. This role requires a strong technical background, a critical-thinking mindset, a passion to launch new technologies, leadership/mentorship capability, and demonstrated ability to execute quickly and effectively. What You'll Do As pack sub-team lead, you'll take full responsibility for one of the major Semi battery subsystems, and work closely with the other subsystems (module, ancillaries, structures, electronics, firmware, etc) to design, validate, and land ongoing improvements to the existing Semi battery design, as well as any potential future battery iterations and variants Technical and managerial leadership of your direct reports on the pack sub-team. You will be responsible for technical oversight, career mentorship, performance reviews, resource management, and hiring for your sub-team Technical ownership of the pack sub-system, involving requirements definition, oversight of all 3d part design, integration with other battery subsystems, coordination with teams across Tesla (Test, Manufacturing, Quality, NPI, Supply Chain, etc), design and release documentation, and design support for all builds and test efforts What You'll Bring Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience Minimum 8 years of related industry experience (HV battery experience a plus), with experience managing direct reports or leading a small team Deep understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals (heat transfer, fluids, statics, dynamics, structural design, GD&T) Demonstrated experience and comfort working in fast-paced environments with aggressive timelines Demonstrated ability to create products and bring to market: CAD design, to hands on prototyping, to high volume manufacturing Experience with various manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, metal stamping, thermoforming, welding/brazing, plating, heat treating, and bonding. Direct machine shop skills a plus Experience in designing for high volume assembly, both manual and automated Strong documentation and presentation skillset, and comfortable with technical reporting up to VP level Experience defining test plans, designing test setups, and analyzing data. Proficiency in CAD modeling.
