Drafting Full Job Description Position Summary:
The Mechanical Designer is responsible for the design, analysis, and detailing of ASME Section VIII shell & tube heat exchangers. This role supports both standard and custom builds, ensuring code compliance, manufacturability, and alignment with project schedules.
Key Responsibilities:
Design shell & tube heat exchangers in accordance with ASME Section VIII (Div. 1 / Div. 2 as applicable) Develop detailed fabrication drawings, GA drawings, and BOMs Perform pressure vessel calculations (internal/external pressure, reinforcement, flanges, nozzles) Interpret customer specifications and translate into manufacturable designs Support fabrication through design clarifications, revisions, and issue resolution Coordinate with shop floor and QC to ensure design intent is executable Support NDE, hydro, and AI hold points through proper design and documentation Maintain drawing/document control within ERP systems (e.g., JobBOSS)
Required Qualifications:
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field Minimum 5+ years of experience working with ASME Section VIII pressure vessel design (Div. 1 required) At least 3+ years specifically designing shell & tube heat exchangers under ASME code Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent) Experience performing ASME code calculations (manual or software-based) Strong understanding of fabrication processes (welding, forming, machining) Ability to interpret customer specifications and code requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
7-10+ years of ASME pressure vessel design experience (including complex or custom units) Working knowledge of ASME Section VIII Div. 2 Experience with PV Elite, Compress, or similar calculation software FEA experience for non-standard or high-risk designs Knowledge of NACE requirements and material selection Experience in an ASME "U" stamp code shop environment Familiarity with NDE methods (UT, RT, PT) and inspection hold points
Key Competencies:
Strong working knowledge of ASME code application (not just theory) Ability to produce fabrication-ready, error-free drawings Practical understanding of shop constraints and build sequence Ability to balance robustness, cost, and lead time Ownership of design through full lifecycle (concept → fabrication support)
Performance Expectations:
Designs meet ASME code requirements with minimal revision cycles Drawings are complete and executable by production without rework Proactively identifies design risks and provides solutions Maintains alignment with project schedules and customer commitments
Pay:
$75,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
